The Orioles used the 79th overall pick in the draft (third round) on LSU outfielder Zach Watson. The Red Sox chose him in the 40th round last year.

The school's baseball website includes how Watson "was regarded in high school as the fastest player in the state of Louisiana." He was an infielder in high school.

Baseball America rated Watson as the second-best defensive collegiate outfielder in the draft. He batted .311/.373/.487 at LSU and was 37-for-47 in stolen base attempts.

The Orioles chose New Mexico State shortstop Joey Ortiz in the fourth round, the 108th overall pick. He batted .422/.474/.697 this year with 25 doubles, 10 triples, eight home runs and 84 RBIs.

Baseball America wrote: "It's all about the glove for Ortiz, who many scouts project to have a long professional career because he plays shortstop so well. He's a plus defender with good actions in the field and is regarded as a very hard worker. His tick below-average to average arm plays up because he's fast with his exchange and gets rid of the ball quickly.

"Ortiz is on the smaller side at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, and he makes limited impact when he connects. He has good bat-to-ball skills, however, and makes consistent contact at the plate. Ortiz is no more than an average runner, but his reputation as an impact defender at a premium position should get him drafted on Day 2."

The Orioles selected Darell Hernaiz a shortstop out of Americas High School in Texas, in the fifth round (138th overall). They took Stanford catcher Maverick Handley in the sixth round (168th overall.) and TCU outfielder Johnny Rizer in the seventh round (198th).

Handley threw out 13 of 19 runners attempting to steal this season and 17 of 26 as a sophomore. Rizer batted .315/.383/.535 this season with 16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 39 RBIs and can play center field and the corners.

The first eight picks were used on two catchers, three shortstops and three outfielders, with major colleges represented in Oregon State, Stanford and LSU. The Orioles focused on getting better and more athletic up the middle.

The Red Sox used the final selection in the fourth round on Naval Academy pitcher Noah Song.

Eight members of the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds were chosen to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game: Pitchers Grayson Rodriguez, Drew Rom, Ofelky Peralta, and Zach Matson, catcher Daniel Fajardo, shortstop Adam Hall, outfielder Doran Turchin, and designated hitter Seamus Curran.

The eight players are the most from one SAL team this season and the most Shorebirds since 2014 when they sent seven All-Stars to Hickory.
