NEW YORK – The Orioles clinched a playoff berth last night. Now they go for the home Wild Card, with the magic number at two.
They can secure it tonight with a win and a Tigers loss.
The Tigers and Royals are tied for the second Wild Card, four games behind the Orioles.
The Yankees lead the division by five games with five remaining. Still mathematically possible for the Orioles but unlikely.
Ryan Mountcastle is in tonight’s lineup after his pinch-hit single last night. This is his first start since Aug. 22, when he sprained his left wrist.
James McCann is catching and Adley Rutschman is on the bench. Ryan O’Hearn is the designated hitter.
Zach Eflin has seven quality starts among his eight outings with the Orioles. He faced the Yankees three times this season while pitching for the Rays, shutting them out over six innings in the Bronx, allowing one earned run (two total) in seven innings at Tropicana Field and allowing four earned runs (five total) in five innings in his return to the Bronx.
Eflin owns a 2.11 ERA in eight career starts against the Yankees.
Juan Soto is 17-for-34 with four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs against Eflin.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 2-for-19 with a triple and Gleyber Torres is 2-for-15.
Anthony Santander is the first Oriole with 100 RBIs since Jonathan Schoop (105) in 2017 and the first switch-hitter since Bobby Bonilla (116) in 1996. Santander is the first with at least 40 homers and 100 RBIs since Mark Trumbo in 2016.
Colton Cower is batting .321/.367/.714 (9-for-28) with two doubles and three home runs in his last eight games. Ryan O’Hearn is 7-for-16 in his last six games.
Left-hander Keegan Akin hasn’t allowed a run in 13 of his last 15 outings, posting a 1.06 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 17 innings.
Nestor Cortes was supposed to start for New York but he underwent an MRI on his left elbow this morning that revealed a strained flexor, sending him to the 15-day injured list. Cortes has allowed only one run in his last three appearances over 15 1/3 innings. He has a 1.58 ERA in his last 40 innings.
Marcus Stroman is back in the rotation for tonight’s start. He has a 4.04 ERA and 1.434 WHIP in 29 games.
Stroman has made 14 career appearances (13 starts) versus the Orioles and posted a 3.21 ERA in 81 1/3 innings.
The Yankees will try again to clinch the division tonight.
