Orioles and Yankees lineups (plus notes)

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde waited until later than usual to post his lineup for tonight's series opener against the Yankees in the Bronx. He had to check on a few players with questionable health statuses.

"We're just waiting on a couple guys and it's that time of year," he said.

Austin Wynns is starting again behind the plate, as he did Wednesday in Toronto. The team was off yesterday.

Ryan Mountcastle is playing first base and Trey Mancini is batting fourth as the designated hitter. Austin Hays is in left field and Anthony Santander in right.

Ramón Urías is playing third base again and batting fifth.

Left-hander John Means has posted back-to-back quality starts for the first time since May 5 and 11. His second start in 2021 came at Yankee Stadium and he allowed one run and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Means owns a 6.23 ERA and 1.577 WHIP in eight career games (five starts) versus the Yankees. He's allowed nine runs and 25 hits in 17 2/3 innings in the Bronx.

Nestor Cortes Jr., a former Orioles Rule 5 draft pick, has registered a 2.77 ERA and 1.086 WHIP in 16 games (eight starts) over 61 2/3 innings. He's struck out 64 batters and surrendered only seven home runs.

Cortes has made eight appearances at home and allowed only five runs in 25 2/3 innings. He's never started against the Orioles but has pitched twice in relief and allowed two runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Aaron Judge is 17-for-40 (.425) with a double, eight home runs and 13 RBIs in 11 games against the Orioles this season.

Gleyber Torres has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

Gary Sánchez is batting ninth for the first time in his career.

The Orioles are 5-8 versus the Yankees this season and 2-4 in the Bronx. New York enters this series 6 1/2 games behind the Rays for first place in the American League East and owners of a 39-25 record at home.

The Yankees won 13 games in a row and lost four straight before Wednesday's victory in Anaheim.

Reliever Hunter Harvey is staying with Triple-A Norfolk after allowing four runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning in his fourth injury rehab appearance.

"He had a tough outing," Hyde said. "As of right now, he's going to stay and continue there, and we'll continue to evaluate and if we're going to bring him up or not.

"We were kind of seeing how he was coming back after his outing and how he felt after, and the reports I get, he felt fine after his last outing," Hyde said, "but everybody feels like the right thing to do for him is to not throw him into a major league game right away. And have him make another outing and just continue to re-evaluate every time he throws."

Hyde isn't ready to name a fifth starter.

"I'll let you guys know in the next couple days," he said.

Single-A Delmarva's Jean Pinto was named Low-A East Pitcher of the Month for August. Pinto registered a 1.35 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings and opponents batted .146.

The Orioles acquired Pinto, 20, and starter Garrett Stallings from the Angels in the José Iglesias trade.

Outfielder Mishael Deson was named Player of the Month in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League after batting .429 with a 1.102 OPS, 28 hits and 40 total bases.

The Orioles acquired Deson, 19, from the Rockies in the Mychal Givens trade.
