Orioles answer quickly in the fourth (Jim Johnson sets franchise save record)

BOSTON - Is this the night that Jon Lester finally loses to the Orioles? Lester has won all 14 career decisions against them, but he's failed in his last three attempts to notch a victory. The Orioles have won all three of those games against the Red Sox's bullpen. Lester couldn't hold a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning tonight, giving up hits to the first three batters and falling behind, 2-1. J.J. Hardy singled and Adam Jones doubled to left-center field, and both runners scored on Matt Wieters' single down the right-field line. Wieters increased his team-leading RBI total to 81. Lew Ford walked with one out, but the rally ended on Manny Machado's 1-6-3 double play. Jones has two of the Orioles' four hits. Lester has thrown 60 pitches in four innings, 39 for strikes. He's been aided by two double plays. Boston took a 1-0 lead against Miguel Gonzalez in the bottom of the third on doubles by Daniel Nava and Pedro Ciriaco. Nava would have gotten a triple, but a male fan reached over the fence in foul territory and scooped up the ball before flipping it back to right fielder Endy Chavez. Hoping to avoid an ejection, the fan immediately walked up the steps toward the concourse. Update: The Red Sox strung together three straight two-out hits to tie the game, 2-2, in the fifth inning. Ciriaco reached on an infield hit, Scott Podsednik singled to left field and Dustin Pedroia grounded an RBI single to left on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. Pedroia snapped an 0-for-18 streak. Gonzalez has thrown 90 pitches in five innings, 63 for strikes. Lester has thrown 69 pitches in the same number of innings, 44 for strikes. The Orioles hit into double plays to end the third, fourth and fifth innings. Nate McLouth did it twice. Update II: Wieters doubled with one out in the sixth to score Jones, who walked, and give the Orioles a 3-2 lead. Wieters advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Mark Reynolds' single into center field. Reynolds is 14-for-33 and 15 RBIs in 10 games against the Red Sox this year. No action in the Orioles' bullpen. Gonzalez will return for the sixth. Update III: Darren O'Day retired all five batters he faced after replacing Gonzalez, and Jim Johnson set the franchise record with his 46th save in the Orioles' 4-2 victory over the Red Sox before 37,731 at Fenway Park. Johnson passed Randy Myers on the club's all-time list. O'Day stranded a runner in the seventh. Only six of 41 inherited runners have scored against him this season. Gonzalez allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. He threw 101 pitches, 72 for strikes. Jon Lester finally lost to the Orioles, lowering his record to 14-1. He allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings, with three walks and three strikeouts. He threw 112 pitches, 70 for strikes. Robert Andino left the game in the ninth after being hit on the side of the helmet by a Mark Melancon 94 mph fastball. Andino took a few steps toward the mound, tried to wave off head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and finally walked to the dugout after being checked at first base. Andino reached base four times on two hits, a walk and the HBP. The Orioles are 22 games above .500. They improved to 67-0 when leading after the seventh inning and 52-21 in games decided by one or two runs. The Orioles haven't committed an error in their last 10 games and 112 innings. Russell Martin hit a walk-off home run for the Yankees, who remain one game ahead of the Orioles in the American League East.
