NEW YORK - The Orioles have claimed right-hander Jorge Rondon off waivers from the Rockies and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk, according to a team official.
The Rockies claimed Rondon, 27, from the Cardinals in November and designated him for assignment on May 2. He threw one inning over two games for Colorado this season and allowed 11 runs (10 earned) and eight hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
Rondon appeared in one game with the Cardinals in 2014 and walked a batter in a scoreless inning.
Rondon, a native of Venezuela, is 21-47 with a 4.60 ERA in 10 minor league seasons. He's made 41 starts among his 314 appearances. The right-hander allowed one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings with Triple-A Albuquerque this year.
The Orioles are intrigued by Ronson's upper-90s fastball. He also throws a slider and changeup.
As for today's game in the Bronx, the Orioles are losing 6-2 and Yankees starter Michael Pineda struck out 16 batters in seven innings. He didn't issue a walk and has only three free passes all season, along with 54 strikeouts, over 46 1/3 innings.
Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia replaced Brian Matusz in the fifth and struck out Mark Teixeira after walking Alex Rodriguez. He walked three batters in the seventh and gave up a two-out RBI double to Didi Gregorius, who was thrown out trying for a triple.
Esmil Rogers has replaced Pineda in the top of the eighth. Pineda threw 111 pitches, 81 for strikes.
Jimmy Paredes, who has two more hits today, doubled off Rogers with one out in the eighth and scored on Adam Jones' single.
J.J. Hardy is the only Oriole in the lineup to avoid striking out today. He's homered and singled in three at-bats.
CBSSports.com was the first to report the Rondon signing.
Update: The Orioles lost 6-2, dropping their first series to the Yankees since September 2013.
The Orioles struck out 18 times to set the club record in a nine-inning game.
Pineda's 16 strikeouts are the most by an opposing pitcher against the Orioles in a nine-inning game.
