"Orioles Classics" #TBT: A nailbiter, a decisive blast and the start of something big

One of the great things about baseball is that the game offers something for everyone, an aspect on full display in this week's collection of "Orioles Classics" on MASN.

If you prefer pitchers' duels over slugfests, we've got a good one for you from 2017, a night when the Orioles and Blue Jays matched zeros into extra innings before someone broke through.

Of course, some people prefer lots of offense, and few players produced it like 2016 American League home run champ Mark Trumbo, whose penchant for power leaked into the following season.

And for those who love the historical bent of baseball, we've got you covered with the first three games of the 1970 World Series, when the Birds shut down The Big Red Machine from Cincinnati.

Saturday, June 20 - 7 p.m. - On Sept. 1, 2017, the O's and Blue Jays battled deep into the night - 13 innings, to be exact - before the Orioles emerged with a 1-0 victory on an RBI double by Jonathan Schoop. Talk about pitching prowess! No one could do anything against starter Kevin Gausman over six innings, and relievers Brad Brach, Zack Britton and Miguel Castro each turned in two innings of scoreless relief. Jimmy Yacabonis worked the 13th and picked up the win, the eighth in nine games for the Orioles.

Monday, June 22 - 12:30 p.m. - The Nationals ventured up the Baltimore-Washington Parkway on June 24, 2012 and came away 2-1 losers at Camden Yards. Washington held a 1-0 lead on Adam LaRoche's third-inning sacrifice fly until the eighth, when the Orioles scored a pair on a two-run Matt Wieters home run.

Monday, June 22 - 7 p.m. - It's time for the 1970 World Series, when the Birds battled the Reds. In Game 1 from Oct. 10, 1970, the visiting Orioles grabbed the lead in the best-of-seven series with a 4-3 victory at Riverfront Stadium. Baltimore spotted Cincinnati a 3-0 lead, tied the game on a fifth-inning solo homer by Elrod Hendricks and made Brooks Robinson's seventh-inning shot stand up for the win. Jim Palmer finished one out shy of a complete game, with Pete Richert getting the final out and a save. Take note of Robinson's glovework at the hot corner as he robbed future teammate Lee May of a hit, a highlight-reel play for the ages.

Tuesday, June 23 - 7 p.m. - Game 2 of the 1970 Fall Classic also fell the Orioles' way, a 6-5 win at Cincinnati that put them up two games to none as the series shifted back to Baltimore. Spoiler: The World Series didn't return to the Queen City. In Game 2, the Reds sprinted to a 4-0 lead against Mike Cuellar, but fell victim to a five-run fifth inning that sent the Orioles home victorious. Chico Salmon's pinch-hit single started the uprising, which included RBI singles by Paul Blair, Boog Powell and Robinson before Hendricks' two-run double. Baltimore-born Tom Phoebus poached the win in relief.

Wednesday, June 24 - 2 p.m. - The first game of today's "Orioles Classics" doubleheader features Trumbo, whose 47 homers were tops in the AL in 2016. On April 3, 2017, Trumbo showed he hadn't lost any power, clubbing a solo homer to left field with two outs in the 11th off Jason Grilli for a 2-1 win on opening day.

Wednesday, June 24 - 7 p.m. - The 1970 World Series shifted to Baltimore's Memorial Stadium on Oct. 13, 1970, and a 9-3 rout of the Reds put the Orioles on the precipice of a sweep. Robinson's two-run double gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the first and the Orioles never looked back. Frank Robinson and Don Buford also homered, and winning pitcher Dave McNally helped his own cause with a grand slam, the first by a pitcher in World Series history. (While this ends this week's "Orioles Classics," fear not - Games 4 and 5 will follow on June 25 and 26, respectively.)
