"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Something for everyone

One of the great things about a baseball game is that different people can watch the same contest and be entertained in multiple ways. All depends on what part of the game you like the most.

With that in mind, this week's list of "Orioles Classics" on MASN contains a little something for everyone.

You like offense? Well, we've got bunches of home runs and crooked numbers. How about games in which the Orioles slugged six, seven and five round-trippers?

You like history? Then the final game at Memorial Stadium is right up your alley.

You long for the days when the Orioles were a fixture in the postseason? Does the final two games of the 1970 World Series against the Reds fit the bill?

Perhaps you prefer a little drama along with your balls and strikes. If so, we've got walk-offs and a night the Orioles charged into a first-place tie in the American League East.

Whatever you like most about baseball, "Orioles Classics" is sure to get you in the mood for the national pastime's eventual return.

Thursday, May 21 - 9 a.m. - If we can have breakfast with Wimbledon, how about pancakes or corn flakes with the O's? We're setting the wayback machine to Oct. 14, 1970 for Game 4 of that season's Fall Classic pitting the Birds against the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati. This is the only game of that series the Reds won, taking a 6-5 victory to merely delay the inevitable. The eighth inning, featuring a three-run homer by future Oriole Lee May off Eddie Watt, turned the tide.

Thursday, May 21 - 7 p.m. - The O's scored runs in bunches in a 13-5 shellacking of the Astros on Aug. 18, 2016, many coming via balls sailing out of Camden Yards on an 87-degree evening. J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis each homered twice, while Mark Trumbo and Manny Machado also went deep.

Friday, May 22 - 9 a.m. - Few things in baseball are better than a World Series-clinching moment like the one the Orioles enjoyed on Oct. 15, 1970 at Memorial Stadium. Mike Cuellar spotted the Reds a quick 3-0 lead in the top half of the first and the O's roared back for a 9-3 victory. Frank Robinson and Merv Rettenmund hit home runs, Cuellar scattered six hits for the victory and a crowd of 45,341 went home very happy.

Saturday, May 23 - 10 a.m. - We promised you walk-offs and in this game from June 23, 2014, the Orioles saved their best for last - specifically, the bottom of the ninth. That's when Davis crushed a three-run homer for a 6-4 triumph.

Saturday, May 23 - 9 p.m. - The Orioles did Thursday's six-homer game one better on June 2, 2016, blasting seven longballs in a 12-7 slugfest win over the Red Sox. The game was knotted at 5-5 after six innings, when the Orioles scored three in the seventh and four in the eighth to pull away. Trumbo and Adam Jones each went yard twice, with Machado, Pedro Álvarez and Francisco Peña also connecting.

Sunday, May 24 - 1:30 p.m. - The Nationals came to Camden Yards on July 10, 2015 and Jonathan Schoop sent them home with a 3-2 loss. Matt Wieters' RBI double in the eighth tied the game at 2-2 and Schoop blasted a solo shot into the left field stands for the game-winner in walk-off style.

Monday, May 25 - 9 a.m. - For Memorial Day, we've got a game for the ages from July 25, 2019. That night, the O's and Angels battled deep into the Anaheim night - for 16 innings, to be precise. A two-run blast by Jonathan Villar gave the Birds a 10-8 lead over the Halos in the 16th, but Stevie Wilkerson had to move from center field to the pitcher's mound and get the final three outs, recording a 1-2-3 inning and becoming the first position player to notch a save.

Tuesday, May 26 - 1 p.m. - The Orioles played their final game at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 6, 1991, falling 7-1 to the Tigers in front of a decidedly nostalgic crowd. Joe Orsulak plated the lone run for the home team, and the final pitch by an Orioles hurler on 33rd Street was thrown by Mike Flanagan, who fanned Travis Fryman swinging to end the Detroit ninth.

Tuesday, May 26 - 7 p.m. - Wieters made sure he sent an opening day crowd home happy on April 4, 2016, an RBI single to center field scoring Davis with the decisive run in a walk-off 3-2 victory over the Twins.

Wednesday, May 27 - 4 p.m. - The O's scored in only two frames during a 9-1 rout of the Rays on Aug. 25, 2014 at Camden Yards. But they hit five home runs in those two innings, accounting for all the scoring. Nick Markakis, Steve Pearce, Delmon Young, Hardy and Davis sent souviners into the stands. Make sure to check out the great defense by Jones in center field.

Wednesday, May 27 - 11 p.m. - Before their game against the Yankees on Sept. 6, 2012, the Orioles unveiled a bronze likeness of Cal Ripken Jr. in their growing statuary garden. Once the festivities started, the Birds used a four-run eighth inning to beat the Bronx Bombers 10-8, tying them for first place in the American League East. Jones, Mark Reynolds and Davis went deep in the eighth.
