Orioles confirm Machado surgery

CHICAGO - Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will undergo surgery next week in Los Angeles to repair a slightly torn ligament in his right knee. Executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed the news to reporters this morning at Wrigley Field. The medial patellar is the same ligament that Machado ruptured in his left knee in September at Tropicana Field. Though he suffered only a partial tear in his right knee, the Orioles say the procedure and recovery time will be the same. Manny-Machado-holds-knee.jpgDr. Neal ElAttrache will again perform surgery on Machado, who informed the Orioles yesterday of his decision. Machado said it was a difficult choice, but the pain hadn't decreased and he didn't want to risk disrupting his spring training for a second consecutive year. The Orioles and Machado sound confident that he will be full-go upon reporting to camp in February. Duquette said it's tough to make a trade at this point in the season, and he pointed to the organization's depth as a likely solution. We'll see. More to come.
