Orioles DFA Armstrong and Waddell (plus lineups)

The Orioles have designated right-hander Shawn Armstrong and left-hander Brandon Waddell for assignment today among a bunch of moves leading into tonight's game against the Indians at Camden Yards.

Reliever Hunter Harvey was activated today from the 60-day injured list and he's on the field for early work with the rest of the pitchers. Left-hander Zac Lowther was optioned yesterday to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the active roster.

Infielder Pat Valaika has been placed on the bereavement list, with infielder Ramón Urías recalled from Norfolk. The Orioles also recalled reliever Travis Lakins Sr. to take Armstrong's spot.

In addition, the Orioles claimed infielder Domingo Leyba on waivers from the Diamondbacks and optioned him to Norfolk.

Harvey made four rehab appearances with Norfolk and allowed three earned runs (five total) and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one batter and struck out four.

Nine of 11 inherited runners have scored this year with Armstrong on the mound.

The Orioles claimed Armstrong off waivers from the Mariners on April 28, 2019. He's out of minor league options.

Waddell, who turned 27 yesterday, tossed a scoreless inning in his only appearance with the Orioles after the claimed him off waivers from the Twins May 8. He also worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings with Norfolk.

Waddell had an extended period of inactivity after joining the organization due to the intake process. He went multiple weeks without pitching.

Lakins is 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.563 WHIP in 17 games and 16 innings. The Orioles optioned him on May 23 while recalling Waddell.

Leyba is a 25-year-old switch-hitter who appeared in 21 games with the Diamondbacks in 2019 and 13 in 2021 and went 7-for-47 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. He's played second base, third base and shortstop and is a career .290/.347/.434 hitter in eight minor league seasons.

Leyba was 0-for-22 this season.

DJ Stewart has hit four home runs in his last 10 games. Three of his 14 career go-ahead home runs have come this season.

Ryan Mountcastle has two homers in his past three games after hitting three in the first 41. He's recorded an RBI in three straight games for the third time in his career.

Rookie left-hander Keegan Akin is making his second start this season after facing the White Sox on Sunday and allowing one run in 4 2/3 innings.

Rule 5 pick Tyler Wells earned his first major league win Wednesday with three scoreless innings and is the 10th Orioles pitcher to register a victory this season.

The Orioles haven't posted their lineup.

Indians rookie right-hander Jean Carlos Mejía is making his first major league start after three relief appearances. He's allowed one hit in five scoreless innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Mejía hasn't gone more than 2 1/3 innings or thrown more than 39 pitches. He made two starts at Triple-A Columbus and struck out 10 batters with two runs allowed in nine innings. He also walked five.

The Indians are in second place in the American League Central with a 30-24 record and are 16-12 on the road. The Orioles, winnings of two straight, are 19-37 overall and 8-19 at home.

The teams met seven times in 2019, with the Indians winning four games. They lost two of three in Baltimore. The Orioles haven't swept them in a three-game series at home since July 2016. The Indians' last three-game sweep at Camden Yards was April 2001.
