Orioles end road trip with 5-4 loss (Davis quotes)

The Orioles fell to 10-15 in series finales with today's 5-4 loss to the Pirates. The road trip is finally over. They lost two games in Toronto, two in Washington and two in Pittsburgh. Not exactly how you'd draw it up. The Orioles are back to being a season-worst six games below .500. And now they've got the Reds and Cardinals coming to Camden Yards, followed by another three-city road trip, this one cutting through Atlanta, Arlington and Boston. Zach Britton turned in another quality start today, his 10th in 15 outings. And yes, I mean by definition. Only three of the five runs off Britton were earned. He allowed seven hits in six innings with one walk and five strikeouts. He threw 84 pitches, 55 for strikes. Britton had two more hits today. He also has a 3.19 ERA in his first major league season. And he's healthy, which is cause for a major celebration. Blake Davis' two-run error made the difference in the end, but the Orioles stranded seven runners and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. It shouldn't have been this close. Nick Markakis had three hits, leaving his average at .269. J.J. Hardy and Mark Reynolds each had two hits. Jim Johnson tossed another scoreless inning. He's allowed only four earned runs in his last 21 appearances covering 29 innings. Davis told reporters after the game that he "just misread" the ground ball that scooted through his legs and allowed two runs to score. "I thought it would skip up and bounce a little higher and it stayed down on me," he said during an interview at his locker that aired on MASN. "Just got to put it behind me." "After the game, I was thinking about it, but there's nothing you can do," he added. "It's just tough, though." Davis said he felt comfortable at second base despite not playing the position this season at Triple-A Norfolk. "No excuses," he said. "You've got to be ready to play and I was ready. It's just tough luck."
