ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Gunnar Henderson moves back to third base today and Jorge Mateo is the shortstop, as the Orioles continue their series against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Jordan Westburg is out of the lineup.
Austin Hays is leading off and playing left field. He’s in a 4-for-31 slump in his last nine games.
Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter. Ryan Mountcastle is batting cleanup as the first baseman.
Grayson Rodriguez is making his 12th major league start. He faced the Rays on May 9 in Baltimore and allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Wander Franco and Taylor Walls hit home runs. Walls went on the injured list today with a strained oblique.
Rodriguez has walked 7.5 percent of right-handed batters, versus 13 percent of left-handers.
The Rays are starting Baltimore native Shane McClanahan, a left-hander who’s 11-1 with a 2.56 ERA and 1.127 WHIP with 107 strikeouts in 102 innings. His ERA leads the majors and he’s tied for first in wins.
McClanahan is trying for his 13th quality start. He didn’t complete the fourth inning in his final two starts in June but followed by holding the Rangers to two runs and three hits Monday in six innings.
Right-handers are hitting .195/.267/.370 against McClanahan this season, and left-handers are hitting .265/.342/.309. He's been a reverse-splits guy in his career.
McClanahan is 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 1.122 WHIP in eight career starts against the Orioles. He shut them out over six innings on May 8 at Camden Yards.
Anthony Santander is 6-for-19 with two doubles and a home run against McClanahan. Mateo is 5-for-13 with a double.
Mountcastle is 2-for-18 with eight strikeouts, and Hays is 4-for-21 with a home run and nine strikeouts.
