Orioles lineup vs. Blue Jays

The Orioles will attempt to sweep the Blue Jays this afternoon, winning five straight games against their division rivals and perhaps take sole possession of the third wild card spot.

They would move past Toronto for third place in the American League East.

To review: the Orioles have won 10 of the last 14 games, 12 of 18 and 26 of 37. They’re 25-27 against division opponents after going 20-56 last season.

A victory today would move the Orioles seven games above .500 for the first time since May 22, 2017. They’ve been six over on three occasions this season.

Adley Rutschman and Terrin Vavra are on the bench today.

Ryan McKenna is in left field and Austin Hays in right. Anthony Santander is the designated hitter again.

Since the beginning of August, Cedric Mullins is batting .314 (16-for-51) with three doubles, three home runs, six RBIs and a .895 OPS.

The Orioles hit back-to-back home runs last night, from Mullins and Rutschman, for the 10th time this season.

Austin Voth made two relief appearances against the Blue Jays in Toronto shortly after the Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Nationals, moving into the rotation after the second game. He allowed one run in two innings.

Voth’s only career start against the Jays came in his first appearance of the 2020 season, on July 28, when he allowed two earned runs and three total in five innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit home runs.

Guerrero homered again last night, a two-run shot in the first inning. He has a hit in 25 of his last 26 games against the Orioles, batting .368 (39-for-106) with four doubles, 16 home runs, 32 RBIs and a 1.287 OPS.

The Jays are starting right-hander Ross Stripling, who’s registered a 3.16 ERA and 1.101 WHIP in 23 games (15 starts). He’s walked only 15 batters and surrendered only six home runs in 82 2/3 innings.

Stripling was on the injured list with a right glute/hip strain. He hasn’t pitched since July 30.

The Orioles have faced Stripling five times in his career and scored eight runs with 18 hits in 12 1/3 innings.

Stripling is a reverse splits guy, with left-handers batting .226/.279/.382 in his career and right-handers batting .273/.313/.468.
