NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - The Orioles selected two outfielders in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft. And just as they did in 2014, they took one player from Triple-A and another from Single-A.
With their first selection, the Orioles chose 24-year old Aneury Tavarez from the Red Sox organization. Later in the round, they nabbed 22-year old switch-hitter Anthony Santander from the Indians organization.
Tavarez, a left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic, batted a combined .330/.374/.495 at Double-A Portland (108 games) and Triple-A Pawtucket (five games). He batted .335/.379/.506 with 19 doubles, 13 triples, seven home runs and 47 RBIs in 385 at-bats with Portland.
Tavarez is a career .270/.320/.420 hitter in six minor league seasons.
Santander, from Venezuela, batted .290/.368/.494 with 42 doubles, 20 home runs and 95 RBIs in 128 games at Single-A Lynchburg of the Carolina League. He's a career .271/.343/.449 hitter in five minor league seasons.
The Orioles didn't lose any players in the major league phase.
In the minor league phase, the Orioles selected right-hander Jefri Hernandez from the Reds organization and left-hander Brian Moran from the Braves. Moran is the nephew of former Orioles outfielder B.J. Surhoff.
Update: Duquette said Santander underwent right shoulder surgery. The Orioles didn't have full access to the medicals, but they weren't discouraged from taking him.
Hernandez, 25, posted a 3.06 ERA in 24 relief appearances at Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He walked 20 and struck out 32 over 32 1/3 innings.
Moran made six appearances at Triple-A Gwinnett, posting a 5.06 ERA in 5 1/3 innings, and had a 3.21 ERA in 38 relief appearances at independent Bridgeport. The Mariners selected him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of the University of North Carolina.
The Orioles didn't lose anyone in the major or minor league phases.
