Reliever Pedro Strop was fielding ground balls at shortstop, his old position, before batting practice today. Third base coach Bobby Dickerson was hitting the grounders, with bullpen coach Bill Castro taking the throws at first base.
Strop played catch to loosen his arm before going to shortstop. Pitching coach Rick Adair stood next to him.
The Orioles videotaped the session. Interesting.
O.J. and Chanda Brigance will take the mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch prior to Thursday's 7:05 p.m. game against the Nationals. The Orioles will host O.J. and Chanda in honor of May being ALS Awareness Month. Also Thursday, the Brigance's non-profit organization, The Brigance Brigade Foundation, will host the Orioles' Community Booth, where representatives will be providing information on the organization and handing out giveaway items.
Brigance is one of the few professional football players to win both a CFL and NFL championship, and the only one to do it in the same city, Baltimore. After time with a number of NFL teams, Brigance joined the Ravens in 2000, helped the team claim a Super Bowl victory, and now works as Senior Advisor to Player Development.
In 2007, Brigance was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), a motor neuron disease. Following his diagnosis with ALS, O.J. and his wife Chanda created the Brigance Brigade Fund to raise funds to improve the quality of life of ALS patients and their families through much needed equipment and services.
