Orioles outlast the downpour and Angels to win 4-3

It was not exactly a routine win, and it ended a long time after it started, but the Orioles topped the Los Angeles Angels tonight, 4-3, to take the series and homestand opener at Camden Yards. The teams, and a some hearty fans, waited out a rain delay of two hours and 14 minutes in the last of the sixth, and the O's grounds crew got this field playable when at times that task looked almost impossible. For the fourth time in five starts, Freddy Garcia gave up two earned runs or less. He went six innings to get the win, allowing six hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts. Garcia threw 83 pitches, 55 for strikes. Garcia improves his stellar career record against the Angels to 17-3 with a 2.67 ERA over 30 starts. Adam Jones' two-run homer in the last of the fourth off Jered Weaver put the Orioles ahead 2-1. It was Jones' second homer in two days, his seventh in 18 games and 13th on the year. Garcia took a 2-1 lead to the sixth as the rain got heavier, and Los Angeles tied the score on a Josh Hamilton homer. Mike Trout had homered in the top of the third. But as puddles began to form on the infield, the O's came to bat in the last of the sixth. They scored twice to snap the 2-2 tie. Nate McLouth led off with a bunt single and stole second for his 19th straight steal, which is the longest current streak in the majors. A Manny Machado single to right sent McLouth to third, and he scored as the ball got under Hamilton's glove in right for a 3-2 lead. Jones' sac fly made it 4-2. When Chris Davis bounced into a fielder's choice for the inning's second out, play was halted and the tarp came on the field at 8:46 p.m. After torrential rain, the game resumed at 11 p.m. following the long delay. The Angels pulled within a run in the top of the seventh, but Darren O'Day pitched a scoreless eighth and Jim Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his seventh save in the last seven chances and his 22nd on the year. The Angels lost for the eighth time in 10 games, and they are 4-10 over the last 14 games and 27-37 on the season. The O's won for the eighth time in 12 games, and they are 13-7 over the last 20 to go 36-28 on the year. They could go a season-high nine games over the .500 mark with a win here Tuesday night.
