BOSTON - Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed tonight that infielder Miguel Tejada will report to extended spring in Sarasota and work out for team officials.
Duquette said the Orioles haven't reached a formal agreement with Tejada and no contract has been signed. For now, it's a tryout of sorts that could turn into a deal.
"He's reporting to Sarasota so he can get himself in shape," Duquette said, adding that the Orioles could sign him if they like what they see.
"We've got to take a look first and see what kind of shape he's in."
Tejada, who turns 38 later this month, batted .234/.270/.326 with 16 doubles, four homers and 26 RBIs in 91 games with the Giants last season. He's already had two tours with the Orioles, from 2004-2007 and again in 2010. In between, he was traded to the Astros for five players, including left-hander Troy Patton and outfielder Luke Scott.
In 2010, Tejada batted .269/.308/.362 with 16 doubles, seven homers and 39 RBIs in 97 games before being traded to the Padres for reliever Wynn Pelzer, who's since been released.
Duquette is trying to improve the Orioles' infield defense. Tejada's glove work has steadily declined, causing his move from shortstop to third base. Obviously, his offensive production also has slipped badly, considering that he led the majors with 150 RBIs in 2004.
It hasn't been confirmed whether the Orioles would sign Tejada to a minor league deal, though that's the assumption, and whether this is more significant than Jason Johnson throwing at spring training back in March.
MLB.com first reported that Tejada was headed to Sarasota.
Speaking of defense, the Orioles have committed three errors in the first two innings tonight - Robert Andino and Mark Reynolds in the first and Nick Markakis in the second. A passed ball by Ronny Paulino with two outs in the second allowed Cody Ross to score from third base.
Ross tripled to lead off the inning and Darnell McDonald walked, but Wei-Yin Chen was one out away from escaping the jam.
Update: Reynolds ended his 76 at-bat homerless drought by clearing the Green Monster in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1. Reynolds hadn't homered since Sept. 24, 2011 against Justin Verlander.
