The Orioles optioned reliever Colin Selby to Triple-A Norfolk today and activated pitcher Scott Blewett, who was claimed on waivers yesterday from the Twins.
Selby allowed two runs and three hits in his only inning in Arizona after the Orioles recalled him Wednesday as the roster replacement for Zach Eflin, who’s on the injured list with a right lat strain.
Blewett, who turned 29 five days ago, was designated for assignment again on Saturday after the Twins selected his contract earlier in the week and he allowed one run with five strikeouts and no walks in 4 2/3 innings. He’s made 19 relief appearances in the majors and posted a 2.18 ERA in 33 innings.
Blewett is wearing No. 67.
The Orioles signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor league deal on Sunday. They faced him a few times in spring training with the Braves.
Tromp, 30, is a native of Aruba who is a career .224/.235/.385 hitter in 61 games over parts of six seasons. He was 0-for-5 this season.
Tromp elected free agency last Tuesday after the Braves outrighted him.
Catcher David Bañuelos was placed on Norfolk’s injured list with an oblique strain.
The Orioles also transferred pitcher Brandon Young to High-A Aberdeen. The Tides are in Omaha, but Young is staying close.
A fifth starter is needed Saturday against the Reds and Young is a prime candidate to make his major league debut. He’s started three times for Norfolk and allowed five earned runs in 16 1/3 innings. All five runs came in his last start after 11 1/3 scoreless innings.
Charlie Morton is making his fourth start tonight after allowing 13 runs and 17 hits in 13 1/3 innings. He hasn’t pitched since last Tuesday due to breaks in the schedule and a rainout. Morton owns a career 3.78 ERA in 81 starts on six-plus days rest.
A 62.5 hard-hit ball percentage (95 mph-plus) is the highest of Morton’s career but in a very small sample size.
Morton is 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 1.102 WHIP in seven career starts against Cleveland. Carlos Santana is 4-for-11 with two doubles and two home runs. José Ramírez is 3-for-14.
Morton’s 10 strikeouts in five innings against the Red Sox were third-most by an Orioles pitcher in his home debut, per STATS, behind Don Ferrarese’s 13 in 1956 and Corbin Burnes’ 11 last season.
The Orioles have lost 14 straight games when scoring fewer than five runs and are 0-8 this season. The active streak is the longest in the majors, per STATS.
Also from STATS, the Orioles have scored 48.5 percent of their runs with two outs, second only to the Padres’ 49.4.
The Guardians are starting left-hander Logan Allen, who’s allowed four earned runs in 10 innings in his two starts, but also has allowed 11 hits and walked seven batters. He’s made two career starts against the Orioles and surrendered six runs and 12 hits with 15 strikeouts in 10 innings.
Gunnar Henderson homered in his only at-bat against Allen. Jordan Westburg is 2-for-2 with a double.
Henderson has a 1.091 OPS in 15 career games against the Guardians.
Cleveland won five in a row before Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Royals. The Guardians have allowed 51 runs on the road, tied with the Cubs for fifth most in the majors.
Tonight’s game starts at 7:05 p.m. and airs on MASN2 and TBS.
