Orioles re-sign Tillman to major league deal (updated)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles continue to make news on the first day of full-squad workouts by re-signing pitcher Chris Tillman to a one-year major league contract that guarantees him $3 million, according to multiple sources.

Tillman was taking his physical at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.

The deal is heavy in performance bonuses for innings pitched. He can earn an additional $7 million, according to a source.

Tillman had a couple of minor league offers on the table, including one from the Tigers, but the Orioles were viewed as his first choice by members of the organization. The club continued talks with his agent upon arriving in Sarasota and maintained a dialogue, which included vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson.

Arriving in camp with only Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman as confirmed starters, the Orioles have added Andrew Cashner and Tillman in less than a week. Cashner signed a two-year, $16 million deal that can max out at $41 million with his option, incentives and bonuses.

The Orioles are expecting a bounceback season from Tillman, who's been working out at the complex. He began last season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury and went 1-7 with a 7.84 ERA and 1.892 WHIP in 24 games, including 19 starts.

Tillman's streak of opening day starts ended at three in a row.

In nine major league seasons, Tillman has gone 73-55 with a 4.43 ERA and 1.358 WHIP in 203 games. His only relief appearances came last summer.

The Orioles still don't have a confirmed left-handed starter for the rotation. Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr. is a candidate.

A corresponding 40-man roster move is coming to create a spot for Tillman. The club still hasn't announced the deal.

Update: Tillman didn't throw today because he worked out for the Tigers on Saturday.

Alex Presley will receive $1.1 million if he's in the majors, as first reported by SB Nation. He has an out clause for March 24.
