Orioles recall Miguel Castro

The Orioles made another roster move today while continuing their search for fresh arms and perhaps some continuity in their bullpen.

Miguel Castro has been recalled from Double-A Bowie to replace Logan Verrett, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk one day after the Orioles brought him back to the majors.

The shuttle never sleeps.

The Orioles have been stretching out Castro, allowing him to throw four and five innings in his last two appearances. Most recently, he surrendered one earned run and three hits over five innings Thursday in Reading.

Castro made his Orioles debut on May 17 in Detroit and retired all three batters he faced, and had one strikeout. He pitched again the following day and walked three batters over two scoreless innings before being optioned back to Bowie.

The Orioles like the different look that he provides in their bullpen, a guy who can get strikeouts instead of mostly pitching to contact.

Castro was acquired from the Rockies on April 7 for a player to be named later or cash.

Verrett worked 2 2/3 innings yesterday in New York and threw 44 pitches while allowing three runs (two earned). He figured to be subbed out today unless the Orioles chose Jimmy Yacabonis, who made his major league debut yesterday and threw 35 pitches while allowing four runs in one inning.

Verrett has been optioned three times this season.

Castro is on the 40-man roster, eliminating the need for a corresponding move.
