Orioles select left-hander McFarland in Rule 5 draft (updated)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With the 23rd pick in the Rule 5 draft, the Orioles selected left-hander Timothy McFarland from the Indians' Triple-A roster. McFarland goes by "T.J." Make him feel welcome. The Indians chose McFarland in the fourth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. He went 8-6 with 4.82 ERA in 17 starts with Columbus this year, and 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA in 10 starts at Double-A Akron. McFarland is 48-31 with a 3.83 ERA in five minor league seasons. He's made 107 starts among his 116 appearances. The Orioles passed in the second round, and they didn't lose any players in the major league phase of the draft. Update: McFarland is listed at 6-foot-3 and 209 pounds. He was born in Palos Hills, Ill. and attended Amos Alonzo Stagg High School. I know nothing else about him. Executive vice president Dan Duquette will fill in the blanks later. McFarland must stay on the major league roster all season or be offered back to the Indians for $25,000. In the Triple-A phase of the draft, the Orioles selected right-hander Tom Boleska from the Twins' organization. Boleska, 26, was 2-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 46 relief appearances with independent Fargo-Moorhead this year. I'm assuming it's the same guy. He pitched at Double-A Altoona in 2011 and must have signed with the Twins this winter. The Pirates took Boleska in the 35th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. The minor league phase of the draft isn't the same as the major league phase. Boleska doesn't have to stay on the Orioles' roster. The Angels selected Double-A Bowie outfielder Robbie Widlansky in the Triple-A phase.
