Orioles sign draft picks Westburg and Haskin

The Orioles haven't forgotten about their 2020 draft picks while plotting the construction of their camp rosters for the second spring training.

The club announced this afternoon that it's signed infielder Jordan Westburg, their Competitive Balance Round A selection and the 30th overall pick, and outfielder Hudson Haskin, their second-rounder and the 39th overall.

Westburg signed for $2,365,500 and Haskin for $1,906,800 - both at full slot value, according to a source.

Westburg, 21, batted .317/.432/.517 (19-for-60) with six doubles, two home runs, 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored in 16 games as a junior at Mississippi State University before baseball shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. He led the Bulldogs in doubles and slugging percentage and tied for the team lead in homers, runs and total bases (31).

Given 66 starts at shortstop as a sophomore, Westburg slashed .294/.402/.457 (78-for-265) with 21 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 61 RBIs and 68 runs scored.

He later ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the Cape Cod League after hitting .326/.385/.516 with six doubles and four home runs in 25 games with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Westburg, who is represented by the Boras Corporation, tweeted the following:

Haskin, 21, hit .333/.452/.500 (22-for-66) with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 14 RBIs and 18 runs in 17 games as a sophomore at Tulane University. He was third on the team in hits, runs scored, RBIs and total bases (33), and finished fourth in batting average.

In 245 plate appearances as a freshman, Haskin batted .372/.459/.647 with 19 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs and 52 RBIs. He hit .306/.340/.500 with three doubles, four triples, five homers and 23 RBIs in 32 games with Newport in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

A plus runner and defender, Haskin didn't make an error in 73 career games at Tulane.

A decision must be made on whether the Orioles will include their signed draft picks on their 60-player pool.

The Orioles have agreements in place with their two prep selections, third baseman Coby Mayo, a fourth-rounder from Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) High School and right-hander Carter Baumler, a fifth-rounder from Dowling Catholic High School in Iowa.

Both deals are over slot.

Mayo, who had a commitment to the University of Florida, will receive a $1.75 million bonus and Baumler, who committed to TCU, reportedly will receive $1.5 million. The 103rd overall pick had a slot value of $565,500 and the 133rd overall had a value of $422,300.

The Orioles also must sign first-rounder Heston Kjerstad, an outfielder from the University of Arkansas, and third-rounder Anthony Servido, a shortstop from the University of Mississippi. Kjerstad was the second overall pick and Servido the 74th.
