Orioles strike again with two outs, Arrieta gives up four in fourth (updated)

In an earlier blog entry, I noted how 14 of the Orioles' 20 runs this season have scored with two outs. Apparently, it's not just a dome thing. Nate McLouth singled with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, stole second base and raced home on Manny Machado's single up the middle. Nick Markakis had the Orioles' only hit, a single in the first inning, before McLouth ignited the rally. Jake Arrieta came within an out of escaping another jam in the fourth, but the odds caught up to him. Chris Parmelee's broken-bat looper into center field scored Josh Willingham to tie the game, and Brian Dozier followed with a two-run triple to give Minnesota a 3-1 lead. They Twins weren't done. No. 9 hitter Eduardo Escobar collected his second hit on a ground ball up the middle that scored Dozier. The Twins put two runners on base in the second inning before Parmelee grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. Escobar singled with one out in the third, but Arrieta induced two ground balls and was back in the dugout. Willingham led off the fourth with a double and Justin Morneau walked. Arrieta struck out Ryan Doumit and Trevor Plouffe, but the next three batters reached. Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland was warming in the bullpen as Arrieta retired Aaron Hicks on a fly ball to center. Arrieta has allowed four runs and six hits in four innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. He's thrown 79 pitches, 53 for strikes. Update: So much for that trend. The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, scored on a fielder's choice grounder, and got nothing else. Ryan Flaherty struck out looking - and didn't appreciate the call from plate umpire Chris Guccione - Nolan Reimold fouled out and McLouth flied out. Adam Jones and Chris Davis began the inning with singles and Matt Wieters walked. Twins shortstop Eduardo Escobar backhanded J.J. Hardy's grounder and threw wide to third base. Plouffe tried to tag Davis instead of stepping on the bag, which didn't work out. Credit Hardy with an RBI. Twins starter Liam Hendriks really limited the damage, though, and that could haunt the Orioles later.
