Orioles to acquire Gerardo Parra for Zach Davies

The Orioles have reached an agreement on a trade that would send Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Zach Davies to the Brewers for outfielder Gerardo Parra, according to an industry source.

The deal won't be official until medical records are reviewed. As if anyone needs that reminder this week.

Gerardo Parra Brewers.jpgAs of last night, it was believed that Milwaukee wanted at least two prospects for Parra, a pending free agent, but the demands were lowered as the 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline approached.

Parra, 28, extended his career-high hitting streak to 14 games last night. He's batting .328/.369/.517 with 24 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 100 games.

In 24 games this month, Parra is batting .435 with four home runs and a 1.212 OPS.

Parra plays all three outfield positions - he's a two-time Gold Glove winner - and can move into the leadoff spot, with Manny Machado being lowered to second in the order. That's one scenario.

Davies is 5-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 19 outings (18 starts) with the Tides, and he pitched in the Futures Game. The Orioles selected him in the 26th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Mesquite (AZ) High School.

Davies, listed at 6 feet and 150 pounds, impressed the Orioles this spring and soared up their chart of pitching prospects. He would have competed for a rotation spot next spring.

Take a poll in the warehouse and you'll find people who are excited by a one-for-one deal for Parra and others who are leery of surrendering a young Triple-A pitching prospect for a pending free agent who's having a career season.

In the end, the Orioles will capture the corner outfielder that they've been seeking while removing only one pitcher from their system. But are they done?

As I reported last night, they remain in talks with the Phillies regarding outfielder Ben Revere, who's under team control through the 2017 season.
