Orioles make six roster moves, Matusz suspension remains eight games

The Orioles made six roster moves today, including reinstating catcher Matt Wieters from the 60-day disabled list.

They also recalled infielder Rey Navarro from Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contract of left-handed reliever Cesar Cabral.

In corresponding moves, the Orioles optioned catcher Steve Clevenger and pitcher Mike Wright to Norfolk, and designated infielder Everth Cabrera for assignment.

The Orioles have 10 days to waive or trade Cabrera, who reached five years service time in late April and can refuse an outright assignment to the minors.

Cabrera, 28, appeared in 29 games for the Orioles this season and batted .208 (20-for-96) with two doubles and four RBIs.

Cabral, 26, has not allowed a run this season between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. He's 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings over 21 relief appearances. Left-handers were 3-for-25 with 11 strikeouts against Cabral at Triple-A and he stranded all 12 inherited runners.

Cabral owns a 7.71 ERA (four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings over 12 career major league relief appearances with the Yankees during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He's been assigned No. 58.

Left-hander Brian Matusz is expected to begin serving his eight-game suspension tonight, and Cabral gives the Orioles another southpaw in the bullpen. Major League Baseball reduced Milwaukee reliever Will Smith's suspension from eight games to six, but according to sources, Matusz's suspension will remain eight games.

Matusz was ejected from a May 23 game in Miami for using a foreign substance on his forearm - the same infraction that got Smith tossed and suspended.

Navarro, 25, is making his third stint with the Orioles this season. He's hit .276 (8-for-29) with a home run and three RBIs.

In 14 games Triple-A Norfolk, Navarro batted .315 (17-for-54) with a home run and five RBIs.

Clevenger, 29, was recalled on May 26 and went five-for-11 with a double and one RBI. He made the opening day roster and was optioned after one game to create room for Chris Davis, who came off the reserve list.

Wright, 25, was recalled on May 13 and made his major league debut four days later against the Angels. He didn't allow a run in two starts over 14 1/3 innings.

Wright made four starts for the Orioles and went 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA in 24 1/3 innings.

With Wright in the minors, Bud Norris figures to come off the disabled list and start Sunday against the Indians at Progressive Field.
