Orioles recall DJ Stewart

The two-man bench is no longer in existence in Baltimore.

The Orioles replaced pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis, optioned to Triple-A Norfolk late last night, with outfielder DJ Stewart. They made the announcement this afternoon.

Recalling Stewart enables the Orioles to carry three reserves for tonight's game against the Yankees at Camden Yards.

The last of Stewart's seven games with the Orioles occurred back on June 5 in Texas. He sprained his right ankle while chasing a fly ball in foul territory in right field.

Hanser Alberto slid into Stewart while trying to avoid a collision.

Stewart came off the injured list and was optioned to Norfolk on July 14 after the Orioles removed him from a rehab assignment. He went 4-for-24 with the Orioles before the ankle sprain and his return to the majors was delayed because of Anthony Santander's impressive play, Stevie Wilkerson's value in multiple capacities and the club's need to carry extra relievers.

Santander and Wilkerson remain, and Stewart finally joins them.

Stewart was batting .284/.391/.545 with 18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 46 RBIs in 61 games with the Tides.

The other alternative for the Orioles was to recall third baseman Rio Ruiz, but they preferred an outfielder.

Meanwhile, Asher Wojciechowski starts tonight for the Orioles. His only career appearance against the Yankees consists of one scoreless relief inning.

Jonathan Holder is making his first start this season after 33 relief appearances, and only the second of his career. He's been used in relief in 138 games over parts of four seasons.

Holder has faced the Orioles in four games this season and allowed six earned runs (seven total) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Alberto is 15-for-34 (.441) against the Yankees this season.

Trey Mancini has 23 RBIs since the All-Star break.

The Orioles have lost 13 straight games to the Yankees at Camden Yards.

Mancini is the Orioles' ambassador for Players' Weekend on Aug. 23-25. His nickname is "Boomer," and he's still happy that he wasn't traded.
