Orioles reveal minor league and player development staffs

The Orioles announced their 2019 minor league staffs this morning and the composition of their player development department, with many of the changes and returns already reported.

Gary Kendall moves up from Double-A Bowie to manage Triple-A Norfolk, with Mike Griffin returning as pitching coach and Butch Davis as hitting coach. Ramon Sambo is serving as field coach after holding the same title with short-season Single-A Aberdeen for the past two summers.

Buck Britton moves up from Single-A Delmarva, where he spent one season as manager, to replace Kendall at Bowie. Kennie Steenstra returns as pitching coach and Keith Bodie as hitting coach. Josh Conway was hired as development coach after spending 2018 as assistant pitching coach at Coastal Carolina University.

Ryan Minor returns as manager at Single-A Frederick, with Justin Lord serving as pitching coach after spending the past two seasons at Delmarva. Bobby Rose will serve as hitting coach after spending the 2018 season at Delmarva. Adam Bleday has been hired as development coach, his first professional coaching role after the Astros drafted him in 2017.

There's the connection to executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias.

Kyle Moore is managing Delmarva this year after guiding Aberdeen last summer on an interim basis while Kevin Bradshaw recovered from an injury. Justin Ramsey is the Shorebirds pitching coach after spending the last four seasons as a coach at Nova Southeastern (Fla.) University, and serving as a coach at Long Beach State from 2010-14 and Sacramento City College from 2005-10.

Matt Trate enters his first professional coaching season as the Shorebirds hitting coach after serving as an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Goldey-Beacom (Del.) College from 2016-18, hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Cecil College in 2011 and 2013-14 and assistant coach at the University of Akron in 2012. Pat Leyland, son of former major league manager Jim Leyland, has been named development coach after working as a player/coach with Bowie in 2018.

Bradshaw returns as Aberdeen manager, with Robbie Aviles serving as pitching coach after working as the pitching coach at Rockland Peak Performance since 2017. He pitched in the Indians' minor league system for six years.

Tom Eller, who was head coach at Harford Community College for 12 years, joins the IronBirds as hitting coach. Orioles 2015 draft pick Jack Graham, son of former director of player development Brian Graham, begins his first season as a development coach. He was the field coach at Frederick last summer.

Former Orioles reliever and bullpen coach Alan Mills gets his first managing gig with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team. Wilson Alvarez is back for his seventh season as pitching coach. Milt May begins his 10th season as hitting coach. Carlos Tosca, the GCL manager for the past two seasons, has been named field coach and minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator.

Elvis Morel will manage the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Orioles, joined by pitching coach Dionis Pascual, outfield coach Benny Adames, hitting coach Ramón Caraballo, first base/baserunning coach Rubén Francisco, field coordinator Miguel Jabalera, third base/catching coach Ramón Lubo and bullpen coach Robert Pérez.

The following will serve as athletic trainers and strength and conditioning coaches:

Kent Qualls enters his seventh season as director of minor league operations. Chris Holt replaces John Wasdin, now the Orioles bullpen coach, as minor league pitching coordinator. Jeff Manto is entering his sixth year as minor league hitting coordinator and Dave Anderson returns as infield coordinator.

Bradshaw's responsibilities expand to spring training coordinator.

Former Orioles B.J. Surhoff and Mike Bordick, the latter also an analyst on MASN, return as special assignment instructors. Ramón Martinez is back as special assignment pitching instructor.

Also returning are Maria Arellano as manager of minor league and international administration, Don Werner as minor league catching coordinator, Scott McGregor as pitching rehabilitation coordinator, Dave Schmidt as Florida and Latin America pitching coordinator, Len Johnston as Sarasota operations administrator, Dave Walker as minor league medical coordinator, Felipe Rojas Alou Jr. as Dominican Academy director, Miguel Jabalera as Dominican field coordinator and Jake Parker as minor league equipment manager.

Johnston is beginning his 43rd season with the Orioles.

Kyle Corrick enters his first season in the Orioles organization, serving as the rehab coordinator.
