Orioles shut out in final All-Star balloting

The Orioles won't have anyone starting in the 2015 All-Star Game. They couldn't rally late in the final voting.

Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson received the most votes in the American League with 14,090,188. Manny Machado finished third among third basemen with 2,609,499 after being fourth last week.

The Angels' Mike Trout (14,013,021) and the Royals' Lorenzo Cain (12,399,127) and Alex Gordon (10,609,006) are the starting outfielders. Adam Jones was seventh with 6,334,939 votes.

Reserves and pitchers will be announced at 7 p.m. Monday on ESPN.

This is the first year that the Orioles haven't placed anyone in the starting lineup since 2012, when Jones and Matt Wieters were chosen as reserves and closer Jim Johnson was selected among the pitchers.

Jones, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy started in 2013, and Jones, Wieters and Nelson Cruz were voted in as starters last summer. Wieters couldn't play following ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow.

The Orioles didn't have any starters from 2006-2012.

Machado figures to be chosen as a reserve. He's batting .299 after going 0-for-3 today, with 18 doubles, one triple, 17 home runs, 46 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. Jones, a four-time All-Star, had two hits today to lift his average to .286 with 13 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs and 38 RBIs.

Closer Zach Britton, with a 1.82 ERA and 23 saves in 24 chances, is a strong candidate to be added on Monday. Darren O'Day is fifth in the American League among relievers with a 1.16 ERA, but the odds are stacked against him due to being a non-closer and the rule requiring every team to have a representative.

The All-Star Game will be played on July 14 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

The Orioles didn't need a rally to win today's game against the White Sox, building a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning and winning 9-1 to avoid a sweep.

Jonathan Schoop homered in his first game since April 17, Caleb Joseph drove in three runs and Steve Pearce collected three hits to raise his average to .233. Miguel Gonzalez allowed one run and four hits over six innings to improve his record to 7-5 with a 3.87 ERA.

Chaz Roe tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three. Brian Matusz struck out two in the ninth.

The Yankees lost to the Rays 8-1, leaving the Orioles one game back in the American League East.
