Orioles sign Vance Worley for 2016

Though the Orioles still haven't announced their trade with the Mariners, they're taking care of other business.

Pitcher Vance Worley avoided arbitration today as the Orioles' first eligible player to receive a contract, agreeing to $2.6 million for the 2016 season. He made $2.450 million this year.

The Orioles claimed Worley, 28, off waivers from the Pirates on Oct. 20. It's too early to define his role, but he brings experience as a starter and reliever.

vance-worley-pirates-sidebar.jpgWorley was 4-6 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.423 WHIP in 23 games (eight starts) over 71 2/3 innings with the Pirates. He posted a 2.83 ERA, allowing nine earned runs in 28 2/3 innings, and held opponents to a .236 average in his 15 relief appearances.

In 104 career games, including 81 starts, Worley has gone 31-28 with a 3.79 ERA in 508 2/3 innings over parts of six seasons.

CBSSports.com first reported the agreement with Worley.

The Orioles' list of arbitration-eligible players is down to 11 if you include first baseman/outfielder Mark Trumbo, who still isn't officially with the team. The trade is pending medical review and the agreement of a second player coming from the Mariners, who are receiving catcher Steve Clevenger.

I'll continue to update this entry throughout the day.
