Joey Ortiz is starting at shortstop tonight as the Orioles continue their series against the Angels at Camden Yards.
Jorge Mateo is on the bench after stopping an 0-for-19 skid last night. He’s 5-for-43 this month.
Terrin Vavra remains in right field. Anthony Santander is the designated hitter.
Ryan Mountcastle returns to first base after coming off the bench last night and contributing a double and home run.
Ryan McKenna is 3-for-6 as a pinch-hitter this season.
Kyle Bradish has posted a 4.56 ERA and 1.481 WHIP in six starts. He held the Pirates to an unearned run and three hits in six innings on Friday.
Bradish is making his first career start against the Angels, the organization that drafted him in the fourth round in 2018. Bradish was part of a four-pitcher return for Dylan Bundy in a December 2019 trade.
Bundy signed a minor league deal with the Mets on March 25 and has a 10.64 ERA and 1.955 WHIP in five starts with Triple-A Syracuse. He’s allowed 12 home runs in 22 innings.
But back to tonight’s game …
The Angels are starting Griffin Canning, a second-round pick in 2017 out of UCLA who’s allowed 17 runs and 24 hits in 24 innings in his five starts this season. Canning’s last two starts have been his worst, with 10 runs and 11 hits over 8 2/3 innings against the Cardinals and Astros.
Canning has made three career appearances (two starts) against the Orioles and gone 0-2 with a 14.46 ERA and 2.464 WHIP in 9 1/3 innings. The Orioles have scored 15 runs and hit six homers.
The right-hander’s final start in 2021 came against the Orioles on July 2, when he allowed six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Trey Mancini and Domingo Leyba homered.
Canning was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back and missed the 2022 season.
