Troy Patton is using Chris Tillman's locker, which is a sure sign that the Orioles recalled him from Triple-A Norfolk last night.
Patton is 6-9 with a 4.91 ERA in 18 starts with the Tides. He gave up five earned runs (seven total) and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings in his last start.
Patton is insurance for the next few days. His next scheduled start was today, so he's available to pitch out of the bullpen.
It appears that Josh Bell has been optioned, though we're waiting for official word.
Patton hasn't pitched in the majors since making three appearances, including two starts, with the Astros in 2007. The Orioles acquired him in the Miguel Tejada trade, and he missed the 2008 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Patton began the 2009 season at Double-A Bowie, going 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts, and went 1-3 with a 6.45 ERA in nine starts at Norfolk.
The Orioles decided to recall Patton after last night's game to aid their battered bullpen. He received the news at 11 p.m. and caught a 5:30 a.m. flight out of Norfolk.
"I got about 2 1/2 solid hours of sleep," he said.
"They haven't told me exactly what I'm doing, but I just assume I'm an insurance policy for a game or two with Gonzo (Michael Gonzalez) and (Kevin) Millwood both coming off (the disabled list).
"It's crazy. I've been with the organization and I've never even seen this room, so it's kind of cool to actually see what I'm going for. I'm excited.
"I know the guys well enough that you'd think I've pitched here, but I've never even been here. It's exciting."
Patton gave up two earned runs or fewer in six of eight starts before his most recent game.
"It's been a roller coaster year. It's been up and down," he said. "I've been making progress, but at the same time I still have setback outings where things don't happen right. But I'm figuring a lot out every time out and I've been competitive pretty much every single start. I've been working on it. It's been getting better."
Michael Gonzalez also is here. I'll post quotes from him shortly.
