The walks came back and left marks on Wade Miley.
Miley handed out six free passes tonight in seven innings, including two in back-to-back fashion in the fourth that led to the first two runs of the game.
And the last.
Miley completed seven innings at 116 pitches, with two runs and four hits allowed and eight strikeouts. He never got an ounce of offensive support, with 18 of the last 19 Orioles retired, and the Rays claimed a 2-0 victory at Camden Yards.
The Orioles got four balls out of the infield, including Jonathan Schoop's double in the second inning.
Plate umpire James Hoye was squeezing Miley, which also can leave marks. But Miley turned in his third consecutive quality start and retired 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.
In his last two starts, Miley has allowed three runs and six hits with 19 strikeouts in 15 innings. In his last three starts, he's allowed seven runs and 13 hits with 27 strikeouts in 21 innings. His ERA stands at 2.08 in 26 innings.
Miley walked seven batters in five scoreless innings in his first start, with only one hit allowed. He walked only one over his next two outings.
The Rays covered tonight's game with five pitchers after scratching Erasmo RamÃrez due to concerns about the weather and the possibility of an interrupted start. Substitute Austin Pruitt allowed one hit, walked a batter, struck out three and hit Hyun Soo Kim in three innings.
Danny Farquhar recorded two outs in the fourth and manager Kevin Cash decided to play matchups. Former Orioles farmhand Jumbo DÃaz, roughly the size of a farm, retired all four batters he faced. Chase Whitley struck out three batters in three spotless innings and was credited with the win. Alex Colomé registered the save.
RamÃrez warmed in the seventh but sat down. The Rays kept him from pitching, but they couldn't keep him dry.
Manny Machado walked with two outs in the first. Kim was hit with one out in the second and Schoop doubled down the left field line, but J.J. Hardy grounded out with the infield playing in and Caleb Joseph took a called third strike.
Joseph still doesn't have an RBI since Sept. 11, 2015.
Chris Davis punched a single to the vacated left side of the infield leading off the fourth, but a popup and two strikeouts killed the rally. Seventeen Orioles were retired in succession before Davis walked with two outs in the ninth.
Mark Trumbo struck out and the Orioles settled for only two hits and their sixth loss in 19 games. Trumbo hasn't homered since his walk-off on opening day.
The bullpen has allowed one run in its last 19 2/3 innings. Donnie Hart (one-third) and Darren O'Day (1 2/3) prevented the Rays from expanding their lead.
The series finale is Wednesday night with a more favorable forecast. The Orioles will take less rain and more runs.
Manager Buck Showalter on when he found out about Ramirez: "About, I'd say, 20 minutes before game time. Got a call from Kevin (Cash) that they were going to start Pruitt. We go over all of them in the advance meeting. We have all the information we need."
On whether it's a challenge facing five relievers: "Not really. If you come to our advance meeting and the way that we prepare, we go through every guy in the bullpen. Video, repertoire. They just got it in some places it was tough to do much with tonight. We're better than that, but they were really good. You've got to tip your hat to them. But what people miss, it's kind of the way the game changed, you're seeing all kinds of different stuff and it's not always the starter. So many adjustments have to be made and when they're all operating like they were tonight, it's really a challenge."
On Miley: "Pretty good. Gave us a great chance to win. I was really happy with his performance. Just missing on some pitches. He got a lot of borderline pitches didn't go his way. Could have had maybe even another inning out of him if those had gone the other way. But he was good, real good. We just didn't do much offensively, obviously."
On what happened to the bats: "They pitched real well. Made a lot of quality pitches in some really tough conditions. There's a lot of excuses there if you want to reach for them, but we're not going to. Will be nice to get outside. Hopefully, we can get some work tomorrow and swing the bats better."
On what can be done to end Trumbo's slump: "If we knew exactly ... Mark is a very good student of the game, a student of hitting. I trust him. He'll figure it out. I know it's frustrating for him. But you know, he's not the only one who hasn't been at the level he's spoiled us with. We've got some other guys that (are struggling). Somebody will pay down the line."
On Joey Rickard's adjusted rehab schedule after rainout at Single-A Delmarva: "Talking with Joey and Delmarva, he's going to DH in the first game (Wednesday) and play left field in the second game. That's the plan right now, weather permitting."
On whether two games in the outfield for Rickard are enough: "If he gets through that physically well, than he presents himself as an option for Friday. Dan (Duquette) may want him to play Thursday. I don't know, but I don't think so."
