Redmond claimed off waivers (Schoop homers)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Orioles have lost pitcher Todd Redmond on waivers to the Toronto Blue Jays, an industry source confirmed this afternoon. The Blue Jays later announced the claim. They optioned Redmond to Triple-A Buffalo. Redmond, claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in February, had been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after allowing five runs and eight hits in eight innings this spring. The Orioles had removed outfielder Trayvon Robinson from the 40-man roster to make room for him. Redmond was a candidate to start for the Tides this season. The waiver claim leaves the Orioles with 39 players on their 40-man roster. The Sun first reported the transaction. Steve Johnson threw 37 pitches and allowed three runs in the bottom of the third inning. He had retired the first eight Tampa Bay batters before walking the bases loaded and giving up a line drive to Evan Longoria that produced a three-run double to left. Robinson reached down for the ball in an attempt to make a shoestring catch and it rolled past him to the fence. Johnson has allowed three runs and two hits in four innings, with three walks and two strikeouts. He threw 19 pitches over the first two innings, 13 for strikes. Jonathan Schoop is 2-for-2 with an RBI single that cut Toronto's lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. The Orioles have loaded the bases with no outs after singles by Alexi Casilla and Robinson. Update II: Johnson allowed three runs and two hits in four innings, with three walks and two strikeouts. He was cruising along until walking the bases loaded, and he could have escaped with just one run allowed if Robinson kept the ball in front of him on the liner. A tough play. Johnson has a 3.46 ERA this spring. Jair Jurrjens retired the side in order in the fifth on 10 pitches, seven for strikes. He induced a pop up and two ground balls. Update III: The Orioles tied the game in the sixth on a one-out double by Jason Pridie, an infield hit by Taylor Teagarden and Tampa Bay second baseman Sean Rodriguez's errant throw after making a diving stop. Schoop untied it later in the inning with a two-run homer, his first in the Grapefruit League. Schoop, who homered twice for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, is 3-for-3 today with three RBIs.
