CINCINNATI - Left-hander Gio Gonzalez has struggled his last two starts, allowing 13 combined runs in back-to-back losses.
Gonzalez worked through bottom of the first unscathed. It was the 31st consecutive first inning he had not allowed a run.
But in the second inning with no one out, the Reds connected on four consecutive base hits.
Adam Duvall started with a double off the left field wall. Eugenio Suarez brought him home with a run-scoring single and the Reds lead 1-0.
Billy Hamilton blooped a single to center field and Ramon Cabrera beat out an infield single to load the bases.
After a strikeout, Zack Cozart slapped a single to right field and the Reds lead 2-0.
After a Joey Votto strikeout, Gonzalez had a shot at getting out of the frame with just two runs allowed. But Brandon Phillips ended that hope with a sharply hit two-run single to center and suddenly the Reds lead 4-0.
The Reds batted around in the frame and finished with six hits and four runs to take the lead after two full innings.
Update: Suarez continued to see Gonzalez well with a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole for No. 13 on the season making it 5-0 Reds. The call was reviews after first called a double. After a one-minute and 10 seconds review, the play was changed to a home run by umpire video replay.
Update II: Trea Turner has reached base three times in a row with a single, a walk and a double. He has two of the three Nats base hits. He is certainly one of the bright spots tonight in what has been a difficult game.
Update III: Jayson Werth prevented a possible shutout in the seventh with a solo homer over the right field fence and the Nats cut the Reds lead to 5-1. It was his ninth homer of the season.
Gonzalez lasted six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 100 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Update IV: Facing Yusmeiro Petit, Cozart crushed his eighth homer of the season and the Reds lead 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Update V: Wilson Ramos doubled and then went to third on a wild pitch to begin the eighth. He came home on a Ben Revere ground out. The Reds lead 6-2.
Duvall hit his 15th homer in the eighth for the Reds, who lead 7-2.
Turner went 3-for-3, a career-high, with a double, two singles and a walk in his Nats 2016 debut.
The Reds defeat the Nats 7-2.
