Reds go after Ross for early runs (Nats fall 9-4 in 10)

Joe Ross had trouble getting outs in the first inning in Saturday's start against the Reds.

The Nationals right-hander allowed four runs in the first three frames against the Mets over six innings in his last start June 27. The Nats rallied for an 11-4 win.

Saturday, the Reds slapped three hits and scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by an Adam Duvall two-run double.

In the second, Zack Cozart added an RBI double to make it 4-0 Reds. The Reds already have four runs and six hits in the first two innings. Is another Nats rally in store for Ross?

Update: Ben Revere delivered a two-out RBI triple in the third to plate Stephen Drew and the Nats are on the board trailing 4-1.

Update II: Ross finished 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts. He tossed 84 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Revere made spectacular catches in the back-to-back innings. In the fifth he came forward to dive and prevent Billy Hamilton a bloop single and then in the sixth jumped into the wall to rob Jay Bruce of extra bases.

Update III: Danny Espinosa crushed a two-run shot, his 16th homer of the season, to cut the Reds lead to 4-3 in the eighth. Bryce Harper later added a game-tying run-scoring single to make it, 4-4.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Clint Robinson popped up to the shortstop to end the threat. The Nats have rallied from a 4-0 deficit to even the game at 4-4 after eight innings.

Update IV: After a Ryan Zimmerman groundout to end the ninth, the Nats and Reds head to extra innings for the second consecutive game, all tied at 4-4. Nats are 4-2 in extras, Reds are 2-6.

Update V: Tucker Barnhart with a bases loaded single in the top of the 10th to score Eugenio Suarez. A second run scored on a Harper fielding error and the Reds lead 6-4. A Matt Belisle wild pitch allowed another run in and it is 7-4 Reds. Jose Peraza added a run-scoring single and another run scored on a Bruce groundout to make it 9-4.

The Nats were unable to rally in the bottom of the 10th against Jumbo Diaz. Final score: Reds 9, Nats 4 in 10 innings. The six-game win streak is over. Josh Smith earned his first win. Sammy Solis takes the loss.
