SARASOTA, Fla. - Outfielder Nolan Reimiold, who left Friday's game in the second inning with a sore right shoulder after hitting a home run, is scheduled to serve as the Orioles' designated hitter Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin.
Reimold said the soreness only surfaces when he attempts to throw - mostly on his follow-through - and he hasn't been doing any upper-body exercises. He's taking a cautious approach, which is encouraged by the club.
Catcher Taylor Teagarden has noticed gradual improvement in his lower back, but he's not expected to play before Wednesday. The Orioles are off Monday, which gives Reimold and Teagarden more time to recover.
Catcher Luis Martinez (strained left oblique) most likely will remain sidelined for another week.
The Orioles will make cuts within the next few days, with three or four pitchers expected to be reassigned to minor league camp.
Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton are scheduled to pitch Wednesday against Spain's entry in the World Baseball Classic. Jason Hammel will start Thursday against the Blue Jays, and Wei-Yin Chen will start Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chris Tillman and Miguel Gonzalez will pitch Saturday against the Boston Red Sox or on March 10 against the Pirates.
Reliever Luis Ayala is probably a week away from making his 2013 Grapefruit League debut.
Update: Reimold hasn't swung a bat since leaving Friday's game.
"I'm taking upper body completely off, just letting it calm down," he said. "I'll take advantage of the off-day tomorrow, too. I could hit, but it's just so early, take it all off and get ahead of it and get better.
"I had a lot of time off, I had neck surgery. Everybody's got their kinks to work out, myself included. It's just a kink I've got to work out. If I'm doing something incorrect or my body's not responding the right way, better to get ahead of it, fix it, and go on from there than just keep playing and getting worse and worse. So, it's just a kink that I've got to work out and I'll be fine."
Teagarden talked about the progress he's making physically.
"I'm just kind of taking it day-to-day, not rushing back," he said. "I just want to make sure any inflammation that's there, trying to get it calmed down, so it's not a lingering issue for the rest of spring. I'm just taking it a little cautious right now - icing, a lot of treatment. Just trying to get it all out of there before I continue with the games.
"I'll come in here tomorrow and see how things are. I haven't really tested it yet. I'm hoping when I do test it, it will be OK, but I haven't gotten to that point. It's tough to say right now.
"It's just a little bit of lingering stuff. It's not like I feel 100 percent yet, so just kind of day-to-day kind of thing."
Jim Johnson and Darren O'Day threw live batting practice today on Field 4. They are scheduled to pitch in relief Wednesday against Spain.
Pedro Strop will pitch today before joining the Dominican Republic for the World Baseball Classic.
Showalter figures to make a decision on whether certain pitchers are starters or relievers - Tommy Hunter, Brian Matusz, Steve Johnson and T.J. McFarland come to mind - "probably the middle of the month."
Extra pitchers will join the Orioles from minor league camp because of the split-squad games on March 17.
