SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter said outfielder Nolan Reimold will make the trip to Dunedin and will be in the starting lineup for Sunday's exhibition game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Reimold will face Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle. Jair Jurrjens will start for the Orioles.
First baseman Conor Jackson is taking batting practice today. Assuming that his lower back doesn't flare up, he also will make the trip to Dunedin and play against the Blue Jays.
Danny Valencia, vying for a spot as the backup third baseman and right-handed designated hitter, will get some innings at first base on Sunday.
Travis Ishikawa, primarily a first baseman, also will get a look in the outfield this spring. He played three games in right field with the Milwaukee Brewers last season.
It sounds like Showalter would like to carry a reserve on the roster who can play first and the outfield. Ishikawa, Jackson, Steve Pearce, Russ Canzler and Ryan Flaherty would qualify.
Showalter noted that Flaherty has "a little different look to him this spring."
"After getting through last year, he's not feeling his way around anymore," Showalter said. "He's a real confident guy. He thinks he can do this and help us. I think he might be right.
"Nobody looks at him as a Rule 5 anymore."
Nick Markakis is the DH today, with Chris Dickerson starting in right field.
"He's been gone a couple days," Showalter said. "We asked him if he had a preference and he said, 'Either one's fine,' and it worked better. I want to see Dickerson in the outfield.
"We've got 14 outfielders here. I've got a real good feel for what Nick can do. I want to get as many looks as I can with those other guys."
Zach Britton and Jake Arrieta are pitching today for the Orioles. They will each get a start Wednesday in split-squad games. The Orioles travel to Tampa to face the New York Yankees, and they host the Boston Red Sox at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium.
The Orioles have painted an orange circle in front of their dugout with Earl Weaver's No. 4 in black.
Update: Left-hander Brian Matusz will start Monday's 1:05 p.m. game against the Yankees in Sarasota. MASN will broadcast the game.
