Renda, Martinson, Hood updates from fall instructional league

I am getting reports that fall instructional league is off to a good start. As you would imagine, the camp emphasizes fundamentals and different individual aspects tailored to each player's specific needs. Second baseman Tony Renda, who was honored with the organization's inaugural Bob Boone Award for passionate and inspired play, has been working on the left side of the infield during instructional league. Renda hit .294 in 135 games for the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns. He had 43 doubles, three triples, three homers and 51 RBIs this season. He swiped 30 bases and was caught just six times. The Cal-Berkeley product had a .380 on-base percentage and an OPS at .785. Similar to what the Nationals have previously done with Zach Walters and others, they are giving Renda reps at different parts of the infield to help his versatility for next season, which I would imagine would begin at High Single-A Potomac. Outfielder Destin Hood and shortstop Jason Martinson have made nice strides offensively and are swinging the bat very well early on, according to a Nats source in Florida. Hood finished at just .224, but with 18 doubles, five triples, four homers and 40 RBIs in 112 games. Martinson was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg during the season and ended up at .234, hitting .268 at Potomac and .185 at Harrisburg in a total of 127 games.
