Rendon and Zimmerman homer to set tone (Nats win 9-8)

The Phillies got going in the first against Nats starter Aníbal Sánchez. With one out, Jean Segura singled, Bryce Harper was intentionally walked and Rhys Hoskins singled Segura home to make it 1-0 Phillies. J.T. Realmuto laid down a bunt that Sanchez deftly fielded and threw him out at first, but Harper scored to make it 2-0.

Zimmerman-Swing-White-Sidebar.jpgIn the bottom of the first against Aaron Nola, Anthony Rendon hit his second homer of the series. After a Juan Soto double, Ryan Zimmerman golfed a two-run shot over the left field wall for his first homer of the season.

After one frame, the Nats have the lead 3-2.

Update: The Nats rallied again in the third. After a single by Adam Eaton and a walk to Rendon, Soto crushed a three-run homer deep to center field, his first homer of the season, and the Nats opened up their lead.

After three innings, the Nats lead the Phillies 6-2.

Update II: The Phillies scored two in the fourth inning, thanks to an RBI double by César Hernández and a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Nick Williams. Nola lasted only three innings, allowing six runs on five hits, including three homers with two walks and two strikeouts. He threw 63 pitches, 36 for strikes.

After four, the Nats lead 6-4 over the Phillies.

Update III: Sánchez finished four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks (one intentional) and striking out three. He threw 76 pitches, 45 for strikes.

After seven innings, the Nats lead 6-4.

Update IV: The Nats bullpen was unable to hold the lead again in the eighth. Tony Sipp allowed a base hit and recorded one out. But Trevor Rosenthal walked two batters to load the bases. Kyle Barraclough then surrendered a three-run double to deep center field to Andrew McCutchen. Segura singled to score McCutchen.

The Nats relievers have now allowed 14 runs on 16 hits in the eighth inning this season.

Mid-eighth, the Phillies lead the Nats 8-6.

Update V: In the bottom of the eighth, Yan Gomes provided an RBI double to cut the Phillies lead to 8-7. With two outs, an Eaton grounder back to Phillies reliever Seranthony Domínguez appeared likely to end the threat, but first baseman Rhys Hoskins dropped the throw. The error allowed Gomes to score the tying run.

After eight innings, the Nats and the Phillies are tied 8-8.

Update VI: In the bottom of the ninth against Phillies closer David Robertson, Rendon singled. Soto walked. Zimmerman also walked. The bases were loaded. Pinch-hitter Jake Noll walked to allow the winning run to score.

Final score: Nats 9, Phillies 8. Both Nats wins so far this year have come in walk-off fashion.
