Rendon leaves game after being hit on elbow (Nats fall 9-3)

MIAMI - Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon left Saturday's game against the Marlins after being struck in the left elbow by a Jose Ureña pitch in the third inning.

With his departure, Rendon's 17-game hit streak comes to an end. We will wait for an update from the Nationals as to the status of Rendon.

Howie Kendrick replaced Rendon at third base, only his second appearance at the position since 2016.

The Marlins strung together good contact against the Nationals starter Max Scherzer early in the second game of the series. In the first inning, Curtis Granderson singled and Brian Anderson doubled to bring him home. Starlin Castro dropped in another single to score Anderson.

Wilmer Difo smacked a two-out double that bounced into the right-center field stands in the second inning for the Nats' first hit. But that was all the Nationals could muster against Ureña through two frames.

Scherzer struck out Granderson swinging to end the second inning with a 97 mph fastball.

In the third, Victor Robles led off with a double down the left field line and Rendon was hit by a pitch. Robles and Rendon moved into scoring position on a passed ball by catcher Jorge Alfaro. Matt Adams sliced a single into left field to score two runs. Only one of the runs were earned because of the passed ball.

Prado singled to lead off the bottom of the third for the Marlins. Castro added his second RBI single and the Marlins regained the lead.

After three innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 3-2.

Update: Robles singled to begin the fifth for the Nats. Kendrick smacked a single to score Robles and the game was tied 3-3. Juan Soto reached on a fielder's choice. Adams doubled, but Soto was tagged out at the plate on a nice relay from right field to second base to Alfaro.

Granderson hit his third homer of the season to lead off the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 Marlins lead.

Update II: The Marlins chased Scherzer in wild bottom of the sixth. With one out, Miguel Rojas and Isaac galloway doubled. Pinch-hitter Rosell Herrera's dribbler in front of home plate was finally gabbed by Scherzer and he threw home too late to get Rojas. The throw got away from Yan Gomes, which allowed Galloway to score. Scherzer was charged with an error.

Scherzer was replaced by Tony Sipp. Granderson's long drive to center field was caught by Victor Robles. But the center fielder was shaken up after the collision with the wall, so his relay was delayed. This allowed Herrera to score from second base on the sacrifice fly. Robles was tended to by the director of athletic training Paul Lessard and manager Davey Martinez. He stayed in the game.

After six innings, the Marlins led the Nats 7-3.

Update III: The Marlins scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings without the benefit of a base hit.

After eight innings, the Marlins led 9-3.

Update IV: The Nats drew two walks in the ninth, but were unable to score against Tayron Guerrero.

Final score: Marlins 9, Nats 3.

The Nats fall to 9-10.
