Richmond wins and Bowie is eliminated from playoff race

BOWIE, Md.- Even though the Double-A Baysox are winning here against Erie by a 2-1 score, the word has come in from Altoona that the game there has been called by rain and Richmond wins 2-1 in eight innings. The Richmond win sends the Flying Squirrels to the Eastern League playoffs and eliminates Bowie. Wes Hodges hit a homer for Richmond in the top of the eighth just a few moments before a rain delay halted play. Even though Atltoona did not bat in the last of the eighth, Richmond is declared the winner by a baseball rule that states the game is official basically because it is the last of the season between those teams. That is too bad for the Baysox, who now know they will not be going to the playoffs this year. Update: Bowie now leads 3-1 heading to the last of the eighth and it's been raining in Bowie, but the games goes on. Pedro Florimon came up with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. Tim Bascom will get the win if it finishes like this. He pitched seven solid innings of three-hit, one-run ball today. Pedro Viola pitched a shutout top of the eighth. Update two: Now the Bowie game is being halted by rain with the Baysox leading 3-2 in the top of the ninth. There is one run in for Erie and runners on first and second when play was stopped the tarp put on the field at 4:35 p.m. Update three: The game has been called by rain, Bowie wins 3-2 to end the season.
