Right-hander Tanner Roark battled through a single and a walk in the first inning by striking out Mark Reynolds.
But in the second inning, Carlos González was walked and Trevor Story worked a long count into a two-run shot over the right-center field wall that gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead.
Roark bounced back to strike out looking the next three hitters he faced and got out of the frame.
The Nationals have had early struggles against Rockies starter German Márquez. He has not allowed a hit through four innings.
In that stretch, he has struck out five batters. The Nats have made solid contact in a couple of at-bats by Adam Lind and Brian Goodwin, but have been unable to get any kind of extended rally started.
After four innings, Colorado leads the Nationals 2-0.
Update: The Rockies added to their lead in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Gerardo Parra and Mark Reynolds made it 4-0 Colorado. Roark exited after finishing the inning, going five frames, allowing four runs, all earned, with four walks and striking out eight. He was forced to throw 109 pitches, 66 for strikes.
Meanwhile, Márquez is pitching a perfect game through five, allowing no runs and no hits. He has retired 15 straight batters.
Sammy SolÃs came in to throw a 1-2-3 sixth innings.
After 5 1/2 innings, the Rockies lead the Nationals 4-0.
Update II: Nats finally got to Márquez with a single off the bat of Matt Wieters. Pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick delivered a double that bounced up onto the left-center field wall. With two outs, Wilmer Difo bloop single down the left field line dropped in front of Parra to score two runs. After six innings, the Rockies lead 4-2 over the Nats.
Update III: Greg Holland picks up his 32nd save as the Nats go 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Final score: the Rockies 4, the Nats 2. The Nats were held to three hits.
