Santander placed on 10-day injured list, McKenna recalled again

The Orioles placed outfielder Anthony Santander on the 10-day injured list this morning with a sprained left ankle and recalled rookie Ryan McKenna from the alternate training site.

McKenna never left the team after yesterday's option. He's back on the active roster and in right field today in Miami after Santander injured the ankle last night while going back to first base on a pickoff attempt.

X-rays and a later MRI were negative, with no fracture in the ankle. But Hyde said this type of sprain takes two-to-four weeks. He couldn't specify whether that timeframe puts Santander back in the lineup or just baseball activities.

"We'll see what the progression is from there," Hyde said.

The injury occurred as Santander appeared to be caught between sliding into the bag and taking one more step. Hyde and head athletic trainer Brian Ebel carried him off the field.

"He just went back to the base awkwardly and rolled his ankle," Hyde said. "Kind of lunged at the bag and his ankle turned. Like your stepping on somebody's ankle or somebody's foot in basketball or something."

Santander is 11-for-56 (.196) with a double, two home runs, two walks and 17 strikeouts.

The roster still includes outfielders Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays, Ryan Mouncastle and DJ Stewart. Yusniel Diaz is on the taxi squad and waiting to make his major league debut.

Hays is in center field today and Mountcastle is in left.

"Depth is at a premium," Hyde said. "We have more depth than we have had here for me in the past couple years, but injuries do happen and sprained ankles happen and Tony will be back. I was just really pleased with the results we got this morning, because when I went out there I was thinking the worst. Seeing him this morning and him feeling different about it only being only a sprained ankle feels good for everybody because he's a huge part of our team.

"Now it's time for other guys to get opportunity, pick up the slack, be a run producer for us. But I like the guys that we'll be putting in there in his spot."

Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann is making his fourth start. He's allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 13 1/3 innings, with three walks and 13 strikeouts.

The rotation has posted a 2.87 ERA in the last six games.

Marlins left-hander Trevor Rogers, the 13th-overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Carlsbad High School in New Mexico, has allowed four earned runs (five total) and eight hits in 15 innings. He's walked nine batters and struck out 23.

Rogers averages 4.6 walks and 13 strikeouts per nine innings in 10 major league starts.

The Marlins optioned last night's starter, Nick Neidert, to their alternate training site. No corresponding move is coming today, leaving them with a 25-man roster.

The Tigers designated Renato Núñez for assignment this morning. The former Orioles infielder/DH is back on the market after going 4-for-27 with two doubles, two home runs and eight strikeouts.

The Orioles are listing Jorge López as Friday night's starter against the Athletics at Camden Yards and the next two spots as TBD. The A's are listing left-hander Cole Irvin, right-hander Chris Bassitt and TBD.
