The Orioles got into the Reds bullpen early tonight.
It's another Jonathan Schoop home run ball.
For the second time in two nights, the rookie second baseman has homered into the visiting 'pen at Camden Yards. He crushed a 90 mph fastball from Dylan Axelrod to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the third.
Axelrod had retired the first eight Orioles, striking out three, before Schoop ambushed him.
Schoop has homered in back-to-back games for the second time in his career. It also happened Aug. 11 and 13 against the Yankees at Camden Yards, with a postponement in between.
The Orioles are 11-1 when Schoop hits a home run. The Orioles are 68-29 when anyone on the team homers.
Just saying...
Schoop has 14 home runs and 40 RBIs this season. Four of his blasts have come at home, and 12 are against right-handers.
David Lough led off the fourth inning with his third home run to increase the lead to 2-0. Lough's last homer came on June 7 against former Oriole Jim Johnson.
Lough is starting in center field tonight, with Adam Jones serving as the designated hitter. Jones has struck out twice.
Miguel Gonzalez has retired 12 of the first 13 Reds. He walked No. 9 hitter Ramon Santiago with two outs in the third.
Gonzalez has struck out four - on a 91 mph fastball, 84 mph slider, 85 mph slider and 82 mph changeup.
Update: The Orioles weren't done in the fourth.
Nelson Cruz doubled and Chris Davis hit his 25th home run, an opposite-field shot to increase the lead to 4-0.
Cruz is the 10th Oriole with a 35-plus home run, 25-plus double season, joining Brady Anderson (1996), Albert Belle (1999), Davis (2013), Jim Gentile (1961), Rafael Palmeiro (1995-96, 1998), Boog Powell (1969-70), Mark Reynolds (2011), Frank Robinson (1966) and Ken Singleton (1979).
Update II: Have yourself a night, Jonathan Schoop.
Schoop's two-run double in the seventh increased the Orioles' lead to 6-0.
Gonzalez has retired 21 of 23 batters and thrown 75 pitches in six innings. In his last four starts, he's allowed four runs and 15 hits in 26 1/3 innings, with four walks and 20 strikeouts. He's allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts.
Update III: Game over. The Orioles defeat the Reds 6-0 to guarantee another series win and move 24 games above .500 for the first time since the conclusion of the 2012 season.
The magic number is down to 16.
Gonzalez threw his first career complete game and shutout. He threw a career-high 117 pitches and allowed four hits, walked one and struck out a season-high eight.
The Orioles posted their 10th shutout of the season and improved to 42-28 at home. They're 63-14 when scoring four or more runs, including 23-1 since July 19.
