Schoop goes on disabled list with oblique injury

BOSTON - The Orioles placed second baseman Jonathan Schoop on the 10-day disabled list today with a strained right oblique, creating a roster spot for pitcher Alex Cobb in a way they hadn't anticipated or desired.

Schoop underwent an MRI this morning and the club received the results shortly before noon.

Cobb officially was recalled from Double-A Bowie today and is making his debut with the Orioles.

The injury occurred last night as Schoop took his final swing in the top of the seventh inning. Engelb Vielma replaced him at second base in the bottom of the eighth.

Removing Schoop from the roster again leaves the Orioles with a three-man bench.

Today marks the second time in a week that the Orioles used the disabled list to create room on the roster. They put outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 10-day DL on April 7 while in New York and recalled pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis.

Schoop played in 162 and 160 games the following two years and was named Most Valuable Oriole in 2017.

The Orioles don't have a timetable for Schoop's return, but oblique injuries normally require more than a 10-day healing period.

Schoop had multiple hits in back-to-back games and is batting .230/.266/.344 (14-for-61) with four doubles and one home run.

Tim Beckham is making his 56th career start and 78th appearance today at second base. Danny Valencia moves to third base.

Pedro Álvarez took ground balls this morning at third base, but he'd probably be used only in an emergency.

Rasmus' recovery from his hip injury is moving slowly and he won't be ready next week when eligible to come off the DL.

An MRI on pitcher Gabriel Ynoa's right shoulder yesterday showed some inflammation in the rotator cuff and he's going to receive an injection on Monday.
