Scott's slam (updated twice)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Luke Scott kept fouling off pitches from Tigers starter Max Scherzer in the first inning. Adding to the drama - the bases were loaded. Scott finally got hold of a ball that didn't slam against the screen behind him, and he drove it over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 4-0 lead. Scott has endured a terrible spring at the plate, but his RBI total climbed to 10 today. He began the day batting .185 with two homers. Luke-Scott_White-Pointing-Wide.gif Brian Roberts led off the inning with a double. Nick Markakis singled and Derrek Lee was hit on the hip to load the bases. Vladimir Guerrero struck out before Scott stepped to the plate. Lee stayed in the game. Update: Jake Fox just led off the second inning with his 10th home run. The ball hit the roof of the concession building beyond the left field fence. Zach Britton is dealing. He struck out the side in the second inning, including Miguel Cabrera on a 95 mph fastball on the outside corner. He's thrown 31 pitches, 23 for strikes. Update II: Scott hit a three-run homer to right field in the second, giving him seven RBIs today. Another run scored on Vladimir Guerrero's bloop single into right. Scott's ball was hit so high, right fielder Casper Wells (Towson University) stood at the fence and kept waiting to time his jump. The beer vendor had to refill his tray while Wells stood there.
