Scouting the enemy: The N.L. East (audio)

What will the Nationals be up against in the N.L. East in 2010? They've had trouble getting off to good starts the last two seasons, especially early on against the Phillies and the Marlins, so it is imperative they begin quickly and not dig themselves an early hole. Steven Goldman, top editor for the Baseball Prospectus, breaks down the Nationals' competition for us in the Eastern division. The Phillies are the favorites again. Goldman thinks they should have worked harder to keep Cliff Lee and get Roy Holladay on the same team for an all-time 1-2 punch. The big name for the Braves is obviously Jason Heyward and whether he makes the team this season. Steven says that Atlanta is wondering if third base and first base can give them the offense they need. The Mets are trying to bounce back from one of the worst years on the injury front in their storied history. On offense, New York has to improve at first base and at catcher, despite the addition of Jason Bay in the outfield. The Marlins have some depth and are hoping Cameron Maybin can become a star.
