Showalter and Reyes speak after 13-0 loss

It was just one of those nights. The Orioles didn't pitch, they didn't hit and they didn't stay in the game for very long. The Orioles allowed 10 runs or more for the 13th time this season. "We made a lot of bad pitches," manager Buck Showalter said following a 13-0 loss to the Blue Jays. "When you give up 20 hits ... Jo-Jo (Reyes) was pretty flat. Didn't have much angle going tonight. Didn't pitch well, obviously. "I was impressed with their kid (Henderson Alvarez). It goes without saying. You don't see many pitchers make that many quality fastball pitches. A lot of life. You can see why they're excited about him. Another product of what they've been doing internationally, in Venezuela. He had command on both sides of the plate and a lot of great life, the ball running around. He was pretty impressive. We knew coming in that he was going to be a challenge. He made as many quality strikes with the fastball as you'll see."

Asked whether Reyes, who allowed seven runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings, might have been too ramped up against his former team, Showalter replied, "Somewhat, maybe. I don't know. He's had some outings that have been OK. He's had some where he's pitched very similar to the way he pitched tonight and it wasn't against Toronto, so I'm not going to put a whole lot of credence in that. "His angle wasn't real good and everything was staying on the same plane." Reyes dismissed the former team theory. "The way I left the ball up today, no matter what team was out there, I was going to get hit hard," he said. "I've got to make an adjustment down in the zone, and that was the only thing I was doing today. "It was just the ball up in the zone. When you're up in the zone, everything flattens out. You have no depth on the ball. "It's frustrating. Guys have been battling and we kind of turned the corner. Today is just frustrating. The only thing we can do is turn the page and start up a new day tomorrow."
