Showalter on Davis as DL candidate: "We're not there yet"

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles haven't reached the point where the disabled list becomes a consideration for first baseman Chris Davis, but manager Buck Showalter didn't dismiss the possibility.

Davis continues to make gradual progress after receiving a cortisone injection Saturday to alleviate the inflammation in his right elbow.

"We're not there yet," Showalter said when asked about the DL. "I still have confidence that we can get this behind us and get enough at-bats to be ready. We're not there yet. Could get there, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen."

Davis might return this weekend when the Orioles are back from their East Coast trip, but Showalter is non-committal.

"I can't make that decision now," he said. "It's a little better today. He's going to do some things he wasn't able to do yesterday and see how he responds to it. I wouldn't put a date on it yet. We're not there yet."

Showalter said Zach Britton is doing "great" as the closer approaches the 12-week mark from his Achilles surgery. And Gabriel Ynoa is making "progress" by removing the protective boot today and doing some work.

"Hopefully, he'll be back in the mix in another week," Showalter said.

Showalter said he's taking most of the regulars to Jupiter and Port St. Lucie and will decide later which players are used in both games or are sent back to Sarasota.

"A lot of it depends on how we come out of it today and how we come out of that first game," Showalter said. "Initially, my plan is to play all of them, play both games. I wouldn't take them over for one game, but that could change. We'll see how everybody responds, how they feel.

"We're embracing it where it might be an advantage. We've been kind of going at this and the guys are going to be in a hotel. We're going to take just about everybody. It's starting to move toward the end of spring and we're seeing two teams we really don't play during the season. There's a lot of good to come out of it, the way we look at it.

"It's not like it's a 17-hour bus ride. It's three hours, we hope. Sleep in a little bit. They're going to be able to get some uninterrupted rest and be by themselves at little bit. I know a lot of our guys are looking forward to it."

The Orioles will make at least one cut to their camp roster, which currently stands at 45.

Upcoming pitching matchups include Kevin Gausman versus the Cardinals' Jack Flaherty Thursday in Jupiter, and Andrew Cashner versus the Mets' Jacob deGrom Friday in Port St. Lucie.
