Showalter on injury concerns for Trumbo and O'Day (game update)

CHICAGO - When the Orioles lineup came out today and Mark Trumbo was not in it, there was at least some reason to wonder if he was being benched after failing to catch a fly ball in the eighth last night that ignited a three-run game-winning rally for Chicago.

sidebar-TRumbo-gray-swing.jpgBut at the same time, you had to keep in mind that Trumbo went 4-for-4 Tuesday night and why take a hot bat out of the lineup? Well, Trumbo is being held out tonight due to a physical reason.

"He banged his (right) knee, he thinks, sliding into second base last night," manager Buck Showalter said. "Got back to the room last night and it was real sore and starting to get some puffiness to it. Came in today about 1:30 and didn't think he was going to be a player tonight. We'll see how it is tomorrow and right now it's day-to-day."

"But it is bothering him to the point where he is not available to DH or play outfield. I can tell you if Mark is not any better (soon) we've got it set up to see their doctor here and ours in Tampa. If it doesn't get better there is the potential to take a picture (MRI or X-ray) if it is not what it initially presents itself as."

Trumbo went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles last night but he also had a fly ball pop out of his glove after a long run toward the right-field line. That came in the last of the eighth when Daniel Palka led off and hit a ball toward the right-field corner. The play was scored as a three-base hit and ignited Chicago's rally as the White Sox posted a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

Trumbo began the year on the disabled list retroactive to March 26 with a right quad strain. He returned to the active roster May 1. In 20 games since then, he is batting .309/.317/.469 with seven doubles, two homers, eight RBIs and with an OPS of .786. He doubled in the second and fourth innings last night, hitting the first ball 113.4 mph and the second at 111.5 mph.

Meanwhile the concern level over injured reliever Darren O'Day seems to have been ratcheted up a bit today. O'Day, who is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA, has been out since May 5 with a hyperextended right elbow.

"Darren did not feel good enough to throw a side today," Showalter said. "It's just slow. Brian (Ebel, head athletic trainer) and them are talking about some other courses of treatment so to speak. So we'll see what that brings in the next day or two. When it happened you would hope like (with) an oblique it would just be gone one day. But that is not going real well."

"Darren, if he still feels like he did today tomorrow, we've got some potential things we want to do in Tampa. I'm not going to get into exactly what that is."

While Kevin Gausman got deserve praise for his 6 1/3 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts last night, Showalter noted this afternoon that catcher Chance Sisco had a strong game catching him and working behind the plate.

"I thought Chance caught real well last night. He's had two or three games here, he has really been catching well. I don't think people realize the number of balls he blocked last night. I mean tough blocks."

"There was never a narrative negatively about (his) catching and calling (games)," the skipper said. "Sharp kid and he picks it up quickly. John (Russell) is as good a catching coach as there is in baseball and he is always talking about how quickly Chance picks things up. It's fun to watch him grow. His throwing has been good. That was one of the challenges. Keep in mind this kid was a shortstop in high school. I talked to him today about trying to make some adjustments to some of the things going on to him up here. We all know he's a better hitter than he's shown."

O's lead early: Jace Peterson's two-out RBI single in the second provided the Orioles a 1-0 lead tonight. It scored Danny Valencia, who singled with one out, advanced to second on a walk and to third on a fielder's choice. The Orioles had been 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position in this series until Peterson's basehit. Meanwhile O's starter Alex Cobb fanned three in two scoreless to start his night.

But that didn't last too long: Chicago scored four in the third to take a 4-1 lead on Cobb. Yoan Moncada hit a 421-foot three-run homer to center and Daniel Palka added an RBI single. Cobb retired the first six in two innings tonight and then allowed four runs on five hits in the third.

Cobb knocked from game: The White Sox added two more runs in the fourth on singles by Yolmer Sánchez and José Abreu to take a 6-1 lead and knock Cobb from the game. He went 3 2/3 allowing eight hits and six runs. His ERA is up to 7.32 and the Orioles are down five runs four innings into this one. Pedro Araujo replaced Cobb.
