Showalter pregame on Machado, Davis, Trumbo and more

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter doesn't miss much, so it is safe to assume he's seen and/or read a few things about shortstop Manny Machado in the last 24 hours. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost Corey Seager for the year and now some feel they will pursue Machado via the trade route.

But the skipper said today he is not paying much attention to such talk.

"I haven't (watched it). In my office, I have the sound off for a reason," he said. "It is not a subject matter in our locker room really. It is something for everybody else I suppose. You know what? Everybody here, including Manny, is focused on trying to get back in this thing. They talk about good players and Manny is a good player. He should take it as a compliment. I know Manny is completely focused on this. You can ask the same question about 10 different ways, but I know the subject Manny wants to talk about is about our team and if he can continue to play like he's playing."

Machado should get his double play partner back soon. In fact, the Orioles are hoping that happens a week from today.

schoop-orange-daytime-bat.jpgShowalter told reporters that second baseman Jonathan Schoop, on the disabled list since April 14 with a right oblique strain, took a full round of batting practice and the ran the bases today in Sarasota, Fla. He will play in a camp game tomorrow, where the Orioles can control his at-bats. On Thursday, he is scheduled to play in a noon game in extended spring training versus the Twins. He will play second base and bat every other inning. If that goes well, Schoop will then play for Double-A Bowie from Friday through Sunday. And then, if he passes all the tests, he will be activated May 8 at Camden Yards.

Also, Tim Beckham remains in Florida in the early stages of his rehab after core muscle surgery.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus, on the DL since April 7 with a left hip flexor strain, today took 30 swings off a tee in the batting cage and did some light jogging. Infielder Luis Sardiñas went on the DL today with lower back soreness and he is also in Florida.

Minor league infielder Ryan Mountcastle, out since mid-March with a hairline fracture in his right hand, has begun to play game at extended spring training in the last two days. He took four at-bats today as a designated hitter.

Showalter was asked if getting the last two days off will help slumping first baseman Chris Davis get a mental reboot of sorts.

"I hope so. We'll see," he said. "It can't hurt. Sometimes a mental thing helps you physically and really being receptive to things. Sometimes this will game will keep knocking you down, but Chris is too talented not to be able to get into another place at some point. I think it's a good fresh start for him and he's been working hard on a couple of things and hopefully it will come into play a little back."

The Orioles get Mark Trumbo back tonight. He comes off the DL, where he has been since late March with a right quad strain. He went 4-for-14 over the weekend at Triple-A Norfolk.

Can Trumbo's return help the offense?

"I think it's a presence thing as much as anything," the skipper said. "One thing we try to do is make pitchers grind through the lineup. Let's face it, what drives a lot of anxiety with pitchers is the fear of power. That is why you see guys that strike out 200 times also walk 90 or 100. Having him as a person (is welcome), but also just the presence he creates in the lineup (helps too)."
